Position Summary: The Senior Technical Accountant serves as a key member of the accounting team and a trusted partner to the Accounting Manager. This role is responsible for overseeing fixed asset accounting, lease accounting, technical accounting research, balance sheet integrity, and compliance with IFRS and applicable accounting standards. The position plays a critical role in ensuring the accurate accounting and reporting of capital expenditures, fixed assets, and lease arrangements while supporting strategic initiatives across the organization.
The ideal candidate will possess strong technical accounting expertise, particularly in IFRS lease accounting, fixed asset management, and financial reporting. The individual will work closely with Operations, Engineering, Procurement, Project Management, and Finance teams to monitor capital projects, ensure timely capitalization of assets, maintain asset inventories, and support an effective control environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Technical Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Serve as the subject matter expert on IFRS and other applicable accounting standards.
- Research, interpret, and document accounting conclusions for complex transactions and business initiatives.
- Prepare technical accounting memorandums and policy documentation.
- Support theimplementation of new accounting standards and accounting policies.
- Assistwith monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and recommendations to finance and business stakeholders.
- Playa major rolein period close.
Lease Accounting
- Manage all aspects of lease accountingin accordance withIFRS 16 and company policies.
- Review contracts toidentifylease components and determineappropriate accountingtreatment.
- Prepare lease calculations, journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Monitor lease modifications, renewals, reassessments, and terminations.
- Ensure completeness and accuracy of lease-related disclosures and reporting.
- Maintain lease accounting records and associated documentation.
- Post monthly lease payments, interest, loan amortization, lease depreciation
Fixed Asset Accounting & Oversight
- Oversee the full fixed asset lifecycle, including asset capitalization, depreciation, transfers, impairments, and disposals.
- Ensure capitalization policies are consistently applied across the organization.
- Review capital expenditures to determineappropriate assetclassification and accounting treatment.
- Maintain the fixed asset subledger and related accounting records.
- Analyze capital projects to ensuretimelyplacement of assets into service and commencement of depreciation.
- Support month-end and year-end close activities related to fixed assets.
- Post monthly depreciation
Asset Inventory & Capital Project Management
- Coordinate and oversee periodic physical fixed asset inventories.
- Reconcile physical asset records to accounting records and investigate discrepancies.
- Partner with Operations, Engineering, Facilities, Procurement, and Project Management teams to track capital projects from initiation through completion.
- Develop processes and controls to ensure capital projects are accurately tracked and recorded.
- Monitor construction-in-progress (CIP) balances and ensuretimelytransfers to fixed assets when projects are placed into service.
- Identifyopportunities to improve asset tracking and reporting processes.
Balance Sheet Reconciliations & Controls
- Prepare and review monthly balance sheet reconciliations for fixed assets, leases,accruedcapital expenditures, and related accounts.
- Investigate and resolve reconciling itemsin a timely manner.
- Ensure compliance with internal control requirements and corporate accounting policies.
- Support internal and external audit requests and provide required documentation.
- Assistin strengthening accounting processes and internal controls.
Leadership & Business Partnership
- Act as a key resource and trusted advisor to the Accounting Manager.
- Support departmental initiatives, process improvements, and special projects.
- Mentor junior accounting staff and provide guidance on technical accounting matters.
- Collaborate cross-functionallyto improve financialaccuracy, reporting, and decision-making.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to fixed assets, lease accounting, and financial close processes.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related fieldrequired.
Experience
- Minimum8to10years of progressive accounting experience.
- Strong experience with IFRS financial reporting and technical accounting.
- Significantexperienceaccounting for leases under IFRS 16.
- Extensive fixed asset accounting and capital project experience.
- Experience managing construction-in-progress and capitalization processes.
- Experience performing balance sheet reconciliations and supporting audits.
- Experience within a manufacturing, industrial, or asset-intensive environment preferred.
Technical Skills
- Dynamics D365 F&O&Excel experience a plus
- Advanced knowledge of IFRS and technical accounting principlesrequired.
- Strong understanding of lease accounting and fixed asset accounting requirements.
- Proficiencywith ERP systems and fixed asset modules.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
