Please note: The central office is located in Alexandria, with projects located within the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia (DMV).

Job Summary

Reporting to the project manager, as superintendent you are responsible for providing on site coordination for various construction projects, including coordinating subcontractors, material and equipment, ensuring that all specifications are met and work is proceeding on schedule and within budget. As superintendent you shall also be responsible for scheduling, inspections, quality control, and job site safety.

This role requires extensive experience in concrete, site development (earthworks and utilities), and stormwater management.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively manage site employees by providing coaching and guidance and resolving any issues and concerns
  • Coordinate the work of subcontractors and speciality sub trades, evaluate their performance
  • Determine manpower requirements and communicate hiring needs to the Human Resources
  • Oversee detailed look-ahead schedules
  • Coordinate time-sheets submissions
  • Participate in meetings with clients
  • Manage materials/supplies ordering and receiving process
  • Ensure regular inventories of equipment, tools, and materials are performed
  • Ensure as-built drawings are updated
  • Coordinate site mobilization and demobilization
  • Ensure construction site documents are produced, maintained and filed according to CDB procedures
  • Participate in project completion & close-out


Maintain health, safety and environmental standards and laws by:

  • Fostering respect for health & safety, and ensuring compliance among workers
  • Ensuring all workers are trained based on the job site requirements
  • Ensuring all workers are aware and following safe work practices
  • Maintaining the records of trainings
  • Conducting site orientations for the new hires
  • Conducting weekly safety meetings
  • Ensuring OSHA compliance
  • Ensuring mandated fire and communications equipment is in place and available when necessary
  • Ensuring PPE and safeguards are available, being worn and/or used properly, and being in a good state of repair
  • Harmonizing the Health & Safety programs of the GC and sub-trades and adjust the programs accordingly
  • Reporting all incidents and participating in incidents investigation
  • Conducting Workplace Health and Safety risk analysis
  • Coordinating work stoppages if necessary
  • Ensuring emergency preparedness and conducting drills/simulations


Qualifications required

Education

  • Diploma/degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management/Engineering, or equivalent in experience


Certifications / licenses

  • Current Driver's Licence


Experience and Knowledge

  • Mandatory: 10+ years of experience in site development - earthworks, utility, stormwater management.
  • Minimum 15 years' experience as a superintendent in civil construction
  • Excellent knowledge of concrete, experience in large concrete pours and formwork
  • Proficient in reading plans and specifications
  • Impeccable safety record
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations and policies to ensure compliance through reporting and administration


Health and Safety Required Training
