Job Description

The Senior Staff Laboratory Engineer will play a key role in one of North America's largest and most advanced geotechnical testing laboratories, the Houston Geotechnical Laboratory (HGL). Working closely with laboratory management and engineering teams, the role supports the delivery of high-quality test data, development of laboratory capabilities, maintenance of technical excellence, and advancement of innovative testing solutions for challenging onshore and offshore projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead by example and place Quality, Health & Safety, Security, and the protection of the Environment as core values while never intentionally placing employees, our processes, customers, or the communities in which we live and work at risk.
  • Work closely with the Lab Manager, Assistant Lab Manager, and laboratory personnel to support the continued growth, development, and advancement of laboratory capabilities and services.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and interpretation of advanced geotechnical laboratory testing programs, ensuring technical excellence and timely delivery of results.
  • Support the maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of laboratory equipment and testing systems to ensure compliance with industry standards and client requirements.
  • Evaluate laboratory data, identify trends and anomalies, and provide sound engineering interpretations to support project decisions and design recommendations.
  • Have the opportunity to participate in experimental research programs that advance the understanding of soil and rock behavior and support innovative engineering solutions for a wide range of geotechnical applications.
  • Have the opportunity to contribute to research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) initiatives utilizing one of North America's largest and most advanced geotechnical testing laboratories, equipped with state-of-the-art experimental facilities.
  • Mentor and train laboratory staff and junior engineers, fostering technical competency, professional development, and a culture of continuous learning.
  • Support accreditation, quality assurance, and quality control initiatives to maintain compliance with applicable standards and uphold the highest level of technical integrity.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions.
  • Possess a PhD degree in Geotechnical Engineering is required.
  • Have one year or more of demonstrated experience in advanced geotechnical laboratory testing preferred.
  • Experience with advanced geotechnical laboratory testing, including Triaxial, Consolidation, Direct Simple Shear, Resonant Column, and cyclic testing methods is highly desirable.
  • Experience with laboratory instrumentation, calibration, troubleshooting, automation, and data acquisition systems is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with laboratory quality management systems, accreditation requirements, and relevant ASTM, ISO, and/or AASHTO standards is preferred.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and motivating multidisciplinary teams is highly desirable.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities while maintaining technical excellence, safety, and quality standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance, coaching, and professional development while fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
