Full Job Description
About the role:

As a Senior Engineer in the Infrastructure org, you will help evolve the cloud foundations behind every Samsara product. Your goal will be to reduce systemic production risk and enable continued growth by making infrastructure safer to change, easier to operate, and more resilient and cost-efficient at scale.

You will bring deep expertise in at least one infrastructure domain, such as compute and workload orchestration, networking, storage and stateful systems, or cloud control planes, and apply it across our multi-account, multi-region AWS environment. You will lead work such as modernizing compute and stateful infrastructure, strengthening capacity and failure isolation, and building standardized infrastructure-as-code workflows and reusable automation.

You will partner with product engineering teams to turn recurring risks and manual operations into durable platforms and paved paths. We do not expect you to be an expert in every infrastructure domain. We are looking for engineers who have built and operated critical systems at significant scale, understand how infrastructure fails, and can use that experience to improve both our platforms and our engineering practices.

In this role, you will:
  • Set technical direction for major infrastructure systems and lead ambiguous initiatives spanning multiple teams.
  • Design, build, and operate reliable cloud platforms, bringing depth in one or more areas such as compute, networking, storage, stateful systems, or infrastructure control planes.
  • Improve the scalability, capacity management, isolation, recovery, and cost efficiency of critical production infrastructure.
  • Build standardized infrastructure-as-code workflows and reusable automation that support self-service provisioning, testing, progressive rollout, reconciliation, rollback, and drift prevention.
  • Identify shared failure modes and build safeguards that prevent localized failures from escalating into broad customer impact.
  • Contribute to multi-account, multi-region, and isolated AWS architectures, including regulated environments such as GovCloud.
  • Participate in operational ownership and incident response, using incidents and near misses to drive durable architectural improvements.
  • Mentor engineers, raise the quality of infrastructure design and operational judgment, and establish patterns that can be adopted across the organization.
  • Clearly communicate architecture, trade-offs, risks, and migration plans to technical and organizational stakeholders.
  • Champion, role model, and embed Samsara's cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices.

Minimum requirements for the role:
  • 6+ years of experience designing and building software, infrastructure, or distributed systems, including operating critical systems in production.
  • Deep expertise in at least one of the following: compute and workload orchestration, networking, storage and stateful systems, or cloud infrastructure control planes.
  • Strong software-engineering fundamentals in Go, Python, Java, or a similar language.
  • Hands-on experience designing and operating infrastructure on a major public cloud platform; AWS experience is preferred.
  • Experience using infrastructure as code, such as Terraform, to safely manage production infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of capacity management, failure domains, observability, rollout safety, and production recovery.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives across teams and through ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

An ideal candidate also has experience in one or more of the following:
  • Designing and operating large-scale compute or container platforms such as ECS, EKS, Kubernetes, or similar orchestration systems.
  • Designing and operating stateful distributed systems such as Kafka, OpenSearch, managed databases, caching, or large-scale storage platforms.
  • Building internal infrastructure platforms, control planes, or self-service developer experiences adopted across multiple teams.
  • Designing multi-account or multi-region cloud architectures with strong workload isolation and disaster recovery.
  • Leading major infrastructure migrations while maintaining availability and controlling operational risk.
  • Delivering measurable improvements in infrastructure capacity, cost efficiency, or developer self-service.

This is a remote position open to candidates residing in the US.

You should apply if:
  • You want to impact the industries that run our world: The software, firmware, and hardware you build will result in real-world impact-helping to keep the lights on, get food into grocery stores, and most importantly, ensure workers return home safely.
  • You want to build for scale: With over 2.3 million IoT devices deployed to our global customers, you will work on a range of new and mature technologies driving scalable innovation for customers across industries driving the world's physical operations.
  • You are a life-long learner: We have ambitious goals. Every Samsarian has a growth mindset as we work with a wide range of technologies, challenges, and customers that push us to learn on the go.
  • You believe customers are more than a number: Samsara engineers enjoy a rare closeness to the end user and you will have the opportunity to participate in customer interviews, collaborate with customer success and product managers, and use metrics to ensure our work is translating into better customer outcomes.
  • You are a team player: Working on our Samsara Engineering teams requires a mix of independent effort and collaboration. Motivated by our mission, we're all racing toward our connected operations vision, and we intend to win-together.
