Job SummaryThe Senior Software Engineer will serve as both a technical contributor and software technical project leader supporting real-time, embedded software development for munitions programs. The position is approximately 60% hands-on software design and development and 40% software technical project leadership.
This role is responsible for the overall software execution of assigned contracts, including managing the software engineering lifecycle, coordinating internal and external development activities, monitoring cost and schedule performance, and ensuring software solutions meet customer, contractual, quality, cybersecurity, and safety requirements.
Key ResponsibilitiesSoftware Design & Technical Leadership- Lead and oversee the complete software engineering lifecycle, including estimating, planning, requirements analysis, architecture, design, implementation, unit testing, hardware/software integration, and range testing.
- Perform hands-on design and development of real-time embedded software.
- Evaluate software requirements for alignment with higher-level performance objectives, customer requirements, and contractual Statements of Work (SOW).
- Coordinate with the Software Architect to ensure technical solutions meet customer requirements and obtain necessary approvals from Functional Management.
- Provide technical direction and leadership to software development teams.
- Lead collaborative problem-solving activities and resolve conflicts across subsystems and engineering disciplines to optimize system performance, quality, and cost.
- Ensure cybersecurity activities are appropriately coordinated within the software domain.
Project & Performance Management- Monitor and control project technical, cost, and schedule performance and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Oversee assigned Control Accounts or Work Packages and provide periodic Estimates at Completion (EAC) in support of Earned Value Management System (EVMS) reporting.
- Develop software project schedules and build plans that align with overall product development timelines.
- Manage and coordinate internal and external software development resources.
- Work with functional and project managers to identify and obtain appropriate technical resources.
- Provide objective and constructive Performance and Development Review (PDR) input for assigned project personnel.
Compliance, Quality & Safety- Ensure project activities are executed in accordance with applicable Business Management System (BMS) procedures.
- Coordinate with Safety Engineering to ensure software safety activities are appropriately documented and the required level of rigor is applied to safety-critical work products.
- Support the Software Verification Lead with verification planning, test environment design, and execution of test scripts and procedures.
- Support successful Software Quality Assurance (SQA) and Software Configuration Management (SCM) audits.
- Maintain compliance with applicable software engineering and software lifecycle management processes.
Stakeholder Engagement & Communication- Plan and lead formal software development milestone reviews, including System Requirements Review (SRR), Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR), and Test Readiness Review (TRR) with United States Government representatives.
- Proactively communicate project risks, issues, and opportunities to the Software IPT Lead, Functional Manager, and Program Manager(s).
- Prepare and present project metrics, technical status, and software development progress during milestone reviews, technical interchange meetings, and IPT meetings.
- Maintain professional and effective relationships with customers, internal teams, and industry partners.
- Conduct effective technical meetings, discussions, and presentations.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in a STEM field.
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in real-time embedded software development and/or software testing, or 2 years of relevant experience with a Master's degree.
- Strong experience with object-oriented design and C++ embedded software development.
- Contemporary software design and development experience.
- Experience providing technical direction and guidance to a team of software developers.
- Practical knowledge and experience with applicable software engineering processes.
- Familiarity with Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) and Software Lifecycle Management.
- Working knowledge of Earned Value Management System (EVMS) and Control Account Manager/Work Package Manager responsibilities.
- Familiarity with Ethernet communications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to effectively lead meetings, technical discussions, and presentations.
- Must be eligible to obtain a Secret security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science.
- Experience with Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) and/or bare-metal real-time application development.
- Working knowledge of cybersecurity, particularly the Risk Management Framework (RMF) and processes associated with obtaining and maintaining an Authority to Operate (ATO).
- Weapon system and/or combat vehicle subject matter expertise.
- Current Secret security clearance.
Certifications- Cybersecurity certification is preferred.
