Full Job Description

Role Purpose

  • Lead and provide technical support to new materials innovation programs
  • Invent and optimize compositions for new glass and glass-ceramics and product applications; capture associated intellectual property with patent attorneys
  • Collaborate with process research and innovation teams
  • Coordinate with and/or direct laboratory technicians
  • Solve technical problems associated with process innovations or manufacturing operations
  • Provide fundamental understanding of glass structure and property relationships for new product inventions
  • Utilize modeling and characterization tools with colleagues within Inorganic Materials and other organizations across Corning's technology community


Key Responsibilities
  • Devise experimental plans and execute critical experiments
  • Review relevant internal and external literature
  • Document and present experimental and modeling results
  • Work closely with team members in product and process development organizations
  • Interface and collaborate with commercial, engineering and manufacturing colleagues
  • Maintain safe and clean work environment.

Experiences/Education - Required
  • PhD in Physics, Glass Science, or Geology and 5-10 years of work experience in relevant industry or lab environment
  • Background in material science, glass, physics, chemistry or geology
  • Experience/background in optical materials and applications
  • Experience with non-silicate and non-oxide materials
  • Technically curious, self-motivated, and able to work independently and in teams
  • Ability to develop and execute experimental plans
  • Hands-on technical aptitude
  • Strong communication skills - verbal and written
  • Attention to detail, rigorous execution of work and documentation
  • Able to manage multiple priorities at once
  • Up to 20% travel required both domestic and international

  • Proficiency in chemistry and chemical durability of materials
  • Able to transition materials/products from research through development and beyond

The range for this position is $109,049.00 - $149,943.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
