Full Job Description
This position supports our life sciences product liability line of business and can be hybrid or fully remote (in the continuous United States) depending upon proximity to an office location. New hires will report to the Chantilly VA office every couple of months when initially starting.
The primary responsibility of the Senior Claims Examiner position is the direct management of assigned complex claims including claims investigation, coverage analysis, monitoring of defense counsel activities, control of legal expenses, reserving, and providing technical expertise throughout the life of the claim file. Senior Claims Examiner will also conduct presentations and work in cross functional teams to advance the line of business.
What you'll do:
• 30% - Provides direction, guidance and resolution throughout the life of the claim: contract and coverage analysis, investigation, evaluation of liability and damages, reserving and resolution.
• 20% - Directs defense counsel with regard to settlement values, defense tactics and strategies per department guidelines. Participate in selection of expert witnesses when appropriate. Maintain communication with supervisor and counsel and keep all internal and external stakeholders apprised of developments.
• 25% - Ensures proper file documentation of assigned files by complying with company and state requirements. Responsible for preparing reports to management by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing claim information.
• 10% - Attends trials, settlement conferences, mediations, and insured meetings. Participate in negotiations when appropriate.
• 5% - Review and approval of reasonable legal expenses and fees associated with the claim file and negotiate adjustment of charges when appropriate and within guidelines.
• 5% - Keeps apprised of changes in the law and court procedures affecting claims in jurisdictions supervised.
• 3% - Prepare and deliver presentations to internal stakeholders, brokers, and/or attendees at conferences, seminars, or other position or company-related functions and meetings.
• 2% - Work with department members, management, and other work groups on policy form research, development and revisions or other regulatory or product development work.Perform special projects as directed by management.
What we're looking for:
• Bachelor's degree required, advanced education or certification (JD, CPCU, ARM, AIC or similar) preferred.
• Minimum five years' experience in the handling complex product liability cases or at least seven years' experience in the legal field, with a high degree of specialized and technical competence.
• Proven superior written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal, and relationship management expertise.
• Superior time management and organizational skills.
• Excellent interpersonal communications and negotiation skills.
• Ability to make prompt, intelligent decisions based upon detailed analysis of complex issues.
• Strong analytical skills.
• Ability to travel up to 25% and willingness and ability to be available beyond normal business hours.
• Valid driver's license required.

Position Salary Range
$100,739.00 - $166,236.00
The salary range displayed represents the entirety of the pay grade for this position. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have, your location and comparison to other team members already in this role.
