Senior Process Engineer - Technical Operations Science & Innovation (TOSI), Band D
Location - Mount Vernon, Indiana, U.S.
Technical Operations Science & Innovation (TOSI) provides scientific and engineering expertise to support the manufacture, continuous improvement, and lifecycle management of AstraZeneca products, working across internal manufacturing sites, external suppliers, and cross-functional product teams to strengthen process understanding, resolve technical challenges, and ensure reliable product supply. This global role is based at AstraZeneca's strategic U.S. Oral Solid Dose manufacturing site, which also serves as a key hub for the introduction of new manufacturing technologies.
What you can expect
This role offers the opportunity to apply and broaden your experience in the technical support of commercial pharmaceutical products and manufacturing processes. You will work on real-world technical challenges that directly affect product supply, process robustness and lifecycle management.
You can expect to:
- Apply and extend your capability in mechanistic and physics-informed process modelling through relevant product and project work.
- Collaborate with experienced engineers and specialists in process engineering, materials science, PAT, data science, equipment engineering and pharmaceutical development.
- Translate physical understanding into mathematical descriptions, identify the data needed to test model assumptions, and apply models to support technical decisions.
- Gain exposure to a broad range of products, manufacturing technologies and sites while working with internal teams and external partners.
- Take ownership of increasingly complex work packages and broaden your technical leadership responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide process engineering support to a prioritized portfolio of commercial products manufactured at AstraZeneca sites and by external partners.
- Plan and deliver defined technical work packages, working with manufacturing sites and cross-functional specialists.
- Apply engineering fundamentals and structured problem-solving to understand manufacturing processes and resolve process or equipment-related issues.
- Develop and test mechanistic explanations of process behavior using calculations, experimental evidence and manufacturing data.
- Develop and apply quantitative process descriptions, including mass and energy balances, scale-up relationships and, where appropriate, mechanistic or physics-informed models.
- Support product transfers, process changes and other activities that protect supply and improve manufacturing robustness.
- Communicate technical reasoning, assumptions, uncertainties and recommendations clearly in reports and discussions with stakeholders.
Essential Skills and Experience
- B.S./M.S. with at least three years of relevant experience in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics or another relevant quantitative discipline.
- Strong understanding of engineering or physical-science fundamentals and the ability to apply them to real processes.
- Evidence of curiosity about why processes behave as they do, with a structured approach to identifying and testing possible mechanisms.
- Ability to analyze data quantitatively, make well-reasoned judgments and explain conclusions, assumptions and limitations clearly.
- Ability to plan and deliver technical work, collaborate effectively and develop new technical capabilities.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- Evidence of exploring a process, system or physical phenomenon mechanistically and expressing that understanding quantitatively.
- Experience using engineering calculations, mathematical models or simulations to understand or predict behavior.
- Experience designing experiments or analyzing data to test hypotheses, distinguish between mechanisms or estimate model parameters.
- Familiarity with a modelling or programming environment such as Python, MATLAB, gPROMS, DEM or equivalent tools.
- Knowledge of relevant areas such as transport phenomena, particle or powder mechanics, residence-time behavior, population balances, scale-up or equipment-material interactions.
