DescriptionWe're hiring a full-time Senior Mobile Engineer, Charging to join our global hardware team on-site in Schenectady, NY. You'll build the native Android extensions that let our React Native apps talk to our next-generation EV charging hardware. The role is focused on the native layer, not on building full native apps. You'll write the Kotlin modules that give React Native apps access to the charger hardware, which they talk to locally over a 40-pin connector.
This role requires working onsite from our Schenectady, NY office five days per week.Your key responsibilities will include:- Build and maintain native Android modules in Kotlin that extend our React Native apps, exposing charger hardware to JavaScript/TypeScript through Turbo Modules, Fabric components or legacy native modules.
- Implement local charger communication over the 40-pin connector between the Android device and the charger hardware, including connection handling, message parsing and error recovery.
- Work with the Android hardware and platform APIs that reach the connector (for example serial/UART and GPIO), plus foreground services and permissions, so communication stays reliable in the field.
- Design clear, typed JS/TS interfaces for native modules (for example Codegen specs), with predictable events, error handling and lifecycle behavior.
- Define the app-to-hardware protocols and data contracts with the embedded and hardware engineering team.
- Package, version and document native modules, and keep them current through React Native and Android SDK upgrades.
- Build test harnesses, simulators and automated tests (unit, instrumentation and on-device) for native-to-hardware flows, supporting hardware and firmware validation.
- Mentor less experienced engineers, and explain problems and solutions at every level, from deep technical dives to architecture and design discussions.
- Work across teams inside and outside engineering, including customer support, product management, marketing and sales.
RequirementsWhat Makes You a Great Fit- A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- 6+ years of professional software development, including 4+ years of Android development in Kotlin (Java a plus).
- Experience writing native modules or extensions for React Native (Turbo Modules, Fabric or legacy native modules), or for similar frameworks such as Flutter platform channels or Capacitor plugins.
- Working knowledge of JavaScript/TypeScript, and of how React Native's native layer (JSI, Codegen, the bridge) passes data, events and work between threads.
- Hands-on experience integrating Android with physical hardware over wired interfaces, such as serial/UART, GPIO or USB, on phones, tablets or embedded Android devices.
- A strong grasp of Android threading, coroutines, background execution limits and runtime permissions.
- Comfort debugging across the app and hardware boundary, using tools like serial monitors, logic analyzers and logcat.
- Familiarity with Scrum or Kanban, the full SDLC and testing practices.
- Clear communication with engineering and non-engineering stakeholders, and good task management.
- Willingness to work in person at our hardware manufacturing facility in Schenectady, NY.
Nice-to-Have Skills- Familiarity with hardware interfaces and protocols such as UART, I2C, SPI, CAN and GPIO.
- AOSP or custom Android hardware (kiosks, embedded displays, payment terminals).
- Experience in EV charging, energy, IoT, connected devices or smart hardware, including OCPP or UL 1998.
- Building test apparatus for hardware or firmware validation. • General electrical safety knowledge.
Compensation and Benefits- The base salary range for this position is $ 95,000-$145,000 per year
- Eligibility for an annual performance bonus and additional benefits.
- Final compensation will be determined based on experience and qualifications.
