The Department: Platform SecurityIn the emerging industry of digital assets, there is nothing more important than trust. The Gemini security team forms the backbone of trust. In fact, Gemini's very first hires were security specialists and we continue to tackle unique challenges in the crypto space. Our team ensures that our customers, clients, and employees are safe, secure, and supported.
The Role: Senior Manager, Platform SecurityGemini takes a cloud-first approach to our services, platforms, and vendors, allowing the organization to continue scaling with hypergrowth hiring, innovative product development, and demanding customer needs. To achieve that scale securely, Gemini has a dedicated Platform Security team whose mission is to enable the business to achieve secure-by-design architectures, implement best-in-class security technologies, and help our engineering partners to achieve security success easily & confidently. To further that mission, we're looking for a new leader to join the existing team to take our vision, strategy, internal partnerships, business alignment, & technical expertise to the next stage of maturity. At Gemini, our best leaders lead from the trenches - we need this Senior Manager to remain hands-on, spending a meaningful portion of their time in the code, IaC, and architecture diagrams alongside their team - writing Terraform, reviewing PRs, and prototyping solutions, not just unblocking others when they're stuck.
Responsibilities:- Provide strategic and technical leadership of Gemini's Platform Security team, personally architecting and implementing security solutions alongside engineers - including writing and reviewing Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, and security tooling code
- Align team-wide strategy with the needs of the business, internal partners, & peer Security leadership
- Enable the ongoing success & growth of the team through creation of hiring plans and hands-on technical mentorship - pairing with engineers, reviewing designs and PRs, and staying current on the team's actual codebase
- Establish a Platform Security roadmap for initiatives that will provide ever-increasing maturity of capabilities for stakeholders, while also reducing toil through automation
- Serve as a senior technical escalation point for the team's hardest architecture and engineering problems, contributing working code/IaC when the situation calls for it
- Foster trust-centric relationships with key partner teams, ensuring that their voices are heard and needs are being met, while achieving excellent security outcomes together
- Lead the development of security policies, procedures, standards, & guidelines that will guide functional security outcomes with all GRC and Audits needs being met
- Determine program KPIs that will meaningfully highlight where we're succeeding, or falling short of, the mission we aim to accomplish for the business
- Provide guidance through lived-experience and industry awareness on the different approaches to architecture, security engineering, and business-achievement goals
- Define a customer-first process, choosing to provide self-service solutions that minimize friction, create agility, and provide value-oriented ways to solve problems
- Manage relevant third-party vendor relationships, leading the determination of when & why to "build" vs. "buy" in response to gaps in capabilities the business may have
Qualifications:- 5+ years of leadership experience for cloud-native engineering and/or security teams, with a strong preference for Amazon Web Services (AWS)-based organizations
- 10+ years of direct, technical experience in relevant roles (e.g., Platform Engineering, Security), with continued hands-on coding/IaC work within the last 2-3 years - not solely past practitioner experience
- Strong experience in AWS, EKS (Kubernetes), IAM, Terraform, GitHub Enterprise Cloud
- Experience leveraging industry security frameworks & standards that act as the basis of maturing the overall security program and enable successful business outcomes
- Comfortable with hiring & scaling a team
- Prior success in leading a team through organizational change management, with a strong preference for start-up experience in a technology-centric business
- Able to easily communicate with technical stakeholders at their level, hearing their feedback and translating those needs or concerns into program-level outcomes
- Pragmatic about security requirements, ignoring "best practices" that don't make sense to the needs of the business by leveraging your team's expertise for decision making
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with an attention to detail
