Full Job Description
We are looking for a Senior Manager, Engineering, Compute who is passionate about building high performing teams that operate at scale.
As a Senior Manager, Engineering, Compute, reporting to the Director, Compute Infrastructure at DigitalOcean, you will join a dynamic team dedicated to revolutionizing cloud computing and AI. You will lead and scale the software engineering teams that build, operate, and evolve our distributed compute control plane services and orchestration layer across our global fleet. In this role, you will evolve from an operational delivery leader into a multi-quarter strategic partner, establishing high architectural standards and building resilient organizational capabilities to ensure our compute platform scales effortlessly with our customers. What You'll Do:
Lead, mentor, and scale multiple software engineering teams within Compute Infrastructure in order to cultivate engineering excellence, sustainable delivery velocity, and strong team leadership.
Drive the multi-quarter technical roadmap for compute orchestration and control plane services in order to ensure high availability, predictable release cadences, and seamless global scalability.
Establish robust operational rigor, automated telemetry, and SLO/SLA standards in order to maximize platform uptime and protect customer droplet performance.
Allocate engineering resources and prioritize multi-quarter initiatives across competing operational commitments in order to deliver predictable, high-impact business outcomes.
Partner cross-functionally with Product Management, Capacity Planning, and Core Cloud teams in order to translate business demands into scalable platform capabilities.
Guide architectural reviews and drive system simplification across Go microservices in order to eliminate technical debt and reduce operational toil.
Cultivate an inclusive culture of psychological safety, open feedback, and continuous learning in order to empower engineers to innovate boldly and own their professional growth.
What You'll Add:
Technical Breadth: Experience leading and scaling software engineering teams focused on low-level infrastructure, Go microservices, distributed control planes, or virtualization primitives (e.g., KVM, libvirt, QEMU, gRPC).
A deep understanding of distributed systems architecture, high-throughput microservices, and control plane orchestration within large-scale virtualized cloud platforms.
Experience leading, coaching, and scaling multi-team engineering organizations, with a proven track record of shipping complex, multi-quarter infrastructure programs on schedule.
The "Human" Element: Exceptional relational intelligence and empathetic communication, with a proven ability to bridge deep technical discussions with business priorities, navigate complex trade-offs, and cultivate lasting cross-organizational trust.
Growth Mindset: A natural curiosity, an appetite for candid feedback, and a "leave it better than you found it" attitude that treats complex infrastructure challenges as opportunities to learn, adapt, and elevate the team.
Compensation Range:
$200,800 - $251,000
Non-sales roles: In addition to base salary, this role is eligible to participate in DigitalOcean's annual bonus plan and may be eligible for a new hire equity grant, subject to plan terms and local eligibility. Bonus amounts depend on company and individual performance.
Sales roles (sales compensation eligible): In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible to earn incentive compensation under the applicable sales compensation plan and may be eligible for a new hire equity grant, subject to plan terms and local eligibility.
