Role description:Arcadis is seeking a
Senior Instrumentation & Monitoring (I&M) Quality Assurance (QA) Engineer with a strong geotechnical design and construction background to undertake detailed engineering review of monitoring data and construction response. The role will evaluate monitoring trends against design intent, baseline conditions, alert thresholds and live site activities, investigate exceedances and anomalous behaviour, and develop technically defensible assessments for review by the I&M QA Lead and the relevant Professional of Record. The successful candidate must be comfortable moving between dashboard-based data analysis, field verification and senior-level engineering judgment.
Role accountabilities:In this role, you will turn complex monitoring data into clear, actionable engineering insight. You will review time-series data, trend plots, rates of change and spatial patterns from geotechnical and structural instruments, assessing results against approved baselines, alert thresholds, movement tolerances, design assumptions and expected construction response. By combining technical expertise with sound engineering judgment, you will identify emerging trends and help maintain confidence in the safety and performance of the works.
You will investigate anomalous readings and apparent exceedances, including flatline data, sudden steps, drift and inconsistent behavior. Your reviews will draw on raw records, adjacent instruments, calibration information, communications data and current site activities to distinguish genuine movement from data-quality issues. You will correlate monitoring responses with excavation, dewatering, ground improvement, CSM works, piling, surcharge, material placement, traffic, weather and other construction activities, developing technically defensible assessments that clearly explain verified conditions, potential significance, uncertainties, immediate actions and recommended follow-up.
You will play a central role in trigger-event response, recommending proportionate actions such as increased monitoring, focused inspections, manual verification, work restrictions, additional analysis or mitigation review. You will also review monitoring plans, instrumentation layouts, method statements, specifications, response action plans, RASCI matrices, installation details, commissioning records, calibration certificates and baseline reports. As construction evolves, you will confirm that instrumentation remains fit for purpose across changing geometries, active work zones and emerging interfaces, coordinating with structural, hydrogeological, marine, geotechnical and construction specialists when monitored behavior crosses disciplinary boundaries.
Beyond data interpretation, you will help strengthen the quality and consistency of the wider monitoring program. You will prepare concise technical memoranda, informative plots and inputs to weekly and monthly QA reports; provide technical direction to Data Review Engineers and Field QA Engineers; and verify the quality of their analyses and records. Through formal shift handovers, you will ensure that active alerts, unresolved anomalies and required follow-up are communicated clearly, supporting a responsive, collaborative and technically rigorous approach across the project team.
Qualifications & Experience:- Bachelor's degree in civil or geotechnical engineering; a master's degree is preferred
- Professional Engineer registration in British Columbia, or eligibility for registration
- Minimum 10 years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience with significant construction-phase and instrumentation/monitoring exposure
- Demonstrated design and field experience with deep excavations, shoring, foundations, piles, ground improvement, dewatering and settlement or vibration monitoring
- Experience interpreting data from inclinometers, piezometers, settlement points, survey prisms or targets, extensometers, vibration monitors, strain instruments and comparable systems
- Experience with specialist monitoring dashboards and strong capability in Excel or equivalent analysis tools
- Ability to produce clear, defensible engineering assessments under short response timelines
Role requirements- Site-based position with day or night shift assignment
- Must be available for field verification and response to monitoring alerts during the assigned shift
- Must maintain a complete technical handover record at the end of each shift
The salary range for this position is $93,000 - $139,000. The base salary represents Arcadis' hiring range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as location, skills, experience, and qualification for the role.
