JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Financial Accountant is responsible for executing and supporting key aspects of the monthly and quarterly accounting close, including journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, financial analysis, and internal reporting. The position partners with Operations, Finance, Land, Revenue, and other accounting groups to ensure complete, accurate, and timely accounting records. The role also supports process improvements, accounting system enhancements, automation initiatives, and special projects.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Month-End Close & Journal Entries

  • Prepare and post monthly and quarterly journal entries, including accruals, reclassifications, amortization, allocations, and other entries for assigned accounting areas.
  • Responsible for assigned aspects of the monthly close process and ensure entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules are completed accurately and timely.
  • Prepare and maintain account reconciliations, investigate reconciling items and unusual balances, and resolve identified issues.
  • Analyze capital expenditures, lease operating expenses, G&A expenses, property taxes, prepaids, leasehold activity, and other assigned accounts to confirm completeness and accuracy.
  • Review accounting activity and supporting data to identify errors, trends, and required corrections.

Reporting and Analysis

  • Prepare monthly and ad hoc internal reporting, account analyses, reconciliations, roll-forwards, and supporting schedules.
  • Analyze actual results against AFE estimates, field estimates, budgets, forecasts, and prior periods, as applicable.
  • Identify significant variances, determine the underlying drivers, and communicate findings to management.
  • Provide accounting information and analysis to Operations, Finance, Land, Revenue, and other departments.

Controls, Audit, Compliance and Process Improvement

  • Perform assigned internal controls and maintain documentation supporting SOX compliance.
  • Support internal and external audit requests and provide complete and timely supporting documentation.
  • Ensure assigned accounting activities comply with U.S. GAAP, company accounting policies, and internal control requirements.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and control of accounting processes.
  • Support ERP enhancements, system testing, workflow improvements, data validation, automation, and other technology initiatives.
  • Assist with accounting analysis for acquisitions, divestitures, and other strategic initiatives, as assigned.
  • Perform special projects, financial analyses, and other duties as assigned by management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and U.S. GAAP.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to analyze and reconcile large data sets.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify accounting issues and drive resolution.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise appropriate judgement in completing assigned responsibilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with other accounting groups and departments.
  • Willingness to take initiative, accept feedback, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • High degree of accuracy, accountability, integrity, and attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet accounting close deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively leverage AI, automation, and data analytics tools to improve accounting processes and analysis.
  • ERP experience preferred. Quorum Upstream experience a plus.
  • Oil and gas accounting knowledge preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:                                    

This job operates in a professional office environment.  This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, printers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand as necessary.  Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time. The ability to use a computer, tablet or smart phone for extended periods of time. Basic use of office equipment such as copier and fax machines. Ability to lift up to 10 pounds occasionally.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

This is a full-time exempt position. Days and hours of work will vary due to workload and needs of the company.

TRAVEL:

Minimal travel is expected for this position.
