Full Job Description
The Atlantic is looking for an innovative, analytical, and curious Senior Engineer to join our Monetization & Growth team. We aim to support a more thoughtful American public by powering and expanding our Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism. Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years of software development experience, including substantial experience building and evolving production web products
  • Experience working with advertising systems, monetization integrations, and/or ad-supported digital products
  • Experience building and debugging user-facing product experiences in close partnership with product and design
  • Experience owning technical work in production, including troubleshooting, operational responsibility, and sound engineering judgment
  • Understanding of how third-party integrations, performance, and product decisions can affect advertising or revenue outcomes
  • Ability to work through ambiguity, break complex problems into technical plans, and drive execution with appropriate stakeholder communication


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with modern web application architecture, APIs, cloud infrastructure, and deployment workflows
  • Familiarity with direct-sold and programmatic advertising workflows, audience activation, or third-party monetization vendors
  • Experience improving performance for ad-supported experiences, including latency, rendering behavior, layout stability, and core web vitals
  • Strong frontend judgment around responsive layouts, embedded third-party experiences, and debugging placement or creative-sizing issues
  • Experience supporting product experiences across both web and app surfaces
  • Familiarity with audience data, targeting, experimentation, consent, or measurement systems
  • 2+ years in a technical leadership role, whether through leading projects, mentoring engineers, or shaping architectural decisions
  • Background in media, publishing, subscriptions, or other consumer product environments with meaningful third-party integrations and data flows


As a Senior Engineer at The Atlantic, you will
  • Write, test, debug, document, deploy, and maintain code across our full stack
  • Build and improve systems that support monetization, advertising, and reader-facing product experiences
  • Partner with Product and Design to turn ambiguous requirements into well-scoped technical solutions
  • Work closely with the Mobile Engineering team on app monetization efforts while remaining anchored on Monetization & Growth priorities
  • Help evaluate, integrate, and improve third-party platforms and vendors that support advertising, targeting, experimentation, and monetization
  • Improve ad-supported product experiences with a focus on performance, reliability, layout stability, and reader experience
  • Participate in and contribute to code reviews, sprint planning, technical documentation, and broader engineering collaboration
  • Participate in an on-call rotation outside standard business hours to monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues
  • Research and recommend technical approaches for future product and platform improvements, presenting tradeoffs clearly
  • Demonstrate technical leadership by mentoring engineers, establishing best practices, and helping maintain a high bar for quality across the engineering organization
  • Balance revenue impact, implementation complexity, system health, and user experience when making technical decisions
  • Work effectively across product, data, revenue, legal, and vendor stakeholders on business-critical systems with real operational dependencies
  • The role will at times include night, early-morning, and weekend work.

Salary minimum: $125,000; Salary maximum: $150,000
