What You'll Do

Reporting to the Discipline Lead - Automation and SCADA, the Senior SCADA Engineer serves as a technical authority developing, checking and approving SCADA design packages and configurations for automation systems and communication infrastructure in electrical facilities within the transmission and distribution, power generation, industrial, and renewable energy sectors. Acting as a subject matter expert, you will provide critical mentorship to the design team and develop processes and procedures. You will support project execution through clear strategy, deep technical expertise, and a proactive commitment to quality.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:
  • Provide expert guidance, training, and mentorship to the design team through project execution, QA/QC reviews, and technical development.
  • Design, thoroughly check, and approve automation and SCADA designs and configurations for transmission and distribution, power generation, industrial, and renewable energy facilities.
  • Act as a lead technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for projects across utility infrastructure, wind farms, solar farms, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  • Prepare, check or approve complete engineering and design packages, including schematics, wiring diagrams, network architecture drawings, load studies, configurations, bills of materials, and supporting documentation.
  • Review and advise on equipment, client, and regulatory specifications and requirements for estimates, designs, reviews and project execution
  • Configure, program, and integrate SCADA systems, RTUs, PLCs, communication networks, and associated control equipment.
  • Design and implement communication networks utilizing industry-standard protocols, including IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5, DNP3, and Modbus.
  • Incorporate cybersecurity best practices and applicable standards, including IEC 62351 and NERC CIP, into automation and communication system designs.
  • Configure, integrate, and troubleshoot equipment from manufacturers such as GE, Siemens, ABB, Eaton, SEL, Allen-Bradley, Survalent, Honeywell, AES, Palo Alto, and Fortinet.
  • Support project execution through all phases, including engineering, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, startup, and field implementation.
  • Provide field engineering support by diagnosing and resolving system configuration, communication, and integration issues during installation and commissioning.
  • Balance office-based engineering and design responsibilities with on-site field support to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, clients, contractors, and vendors to develop effective technical solutions.
  • Ensure all designs and deliverables comply with applicable CSA, ANSI, IEC, IEEE, client, and regulatory standards.
  • Utilize engineering software and design tools, including MicroStation, AutoCAD, SEL acSELerator, and Microsoft Office, to develop and maintain project documentation.
  • Review and revise existing designs, drawings, and control system configurations to improve system performance, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical evaluations, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning activities as required.

Requirements

What We're Looking For (Qualifications/Requirements)
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related Engineering degree required; or Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from an accredited post-secondary institution
  • Must hold an active Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or (PL.Eng.) designation possessing immediate authority and willingness to stamp SCADA design packages and configurations.
  • 2 - 8+ years of experience in the Utilities industry is preferred but not required
  • Previous engineering or design experience in electrical facilities for the Transmission and Distribution, Power generation, Industrial and Renewables sectors is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience in construction and field installations an asset
  • Proficient in medium/high voltage power engineering in electrical facilities for the Transmission and Distribution, Power generation, Industrial and Renewables sectors
  • Proficient ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics
  • Possess strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Eligible for registration with APEGA
  • Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills with the ability to work within strict deadlines
  • Navigate computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks
