ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The Senior Director of Tax will lead Inspire Medical Systems' global tax function and serve as a strategic advisor to senior finance, legal, operations, human resources, and business leadership. This individual will be responsible for tax accounting, tax compliance, tax planning, transfer pricing, international tax, and tax governance in a growing public company. The role requires a hands-on, business-oriented tax leader who can balance technical depth with practical execution, strong internal controls, and clear communication with executive stakeholders.

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the company's ASC 740 tax provision process, including quarterly and annual tax reporting, effective tax rate analysis, tax disclosures, and related financial statement impacts.
  • Oversee all U.S. and international tax compliance activities, ensuring timely and accurate filing of income, indirect, and other tax returns while managing relationships with external tax advisors.
  • Develop and execute tax planning strategies that support business objectives, optimize the Company's tax position, and maintain an appropriate level of tax risk.
  • Provide strategic tax guidance related to international expansion, transfer pricing, financing activities, stock-based compensation, Section 174, R&D tax credits, and other significant business initiatives.
  • Lead transfer pricing and international tax matters, including intercompany transactions, foreign subsidiaries, global tax compliance, and permanent establishment risk assessments.
  • Manage tax audits, controversies, and interactions with taxing authorities, while maintaining strong tax governance and documentation standards.
  • Drive process improvements, automation, and tax technology initiatives to enhance efficiency, scalability, and reporting capabilities.
  • Build and develop a high-performing tax function, providing leadership, mentorship, and oversight of external advisors while serving as the Company's senior tax subject matter expert.
  • Partner closely with the Corporate Controller, CFO, and cross-functional leaders to support financial reporting, compliance, strategic decision-making, and business growth initiatives.

QUALITY SYSTEM RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Document product and therapy related field reports within the prescribed timelines and provide any necessary documents required to complete the investigation. Provide follow-up reporting as needed.
  • Complete training requirements and competency confirmations as required for this position within the required timeline.
  • Comply with applicable quality system procedures/policies and make suggestions for continuous process improvement.
  • Ensure all direct reports maintain training records that comply with applicable quality system requirements.


QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or related field.
  • CPA or Master's in Taxation preferred.

Required Experience:
  • 12+ years of progressive corporate tax experience, including significant public company experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of ASC 740, U.S. federal and state tax, international tax, transfer pricing, and tax compliance.
  • Experience leading tax provision, compliance, planning, and audit activities.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex tax matters to non-tax stakeholders.
  • Experience managing external advisors and cross-functional business relationships.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.

Preferred Experience:
  • Medical device, life sciences, healthcare, or other regulated industry experience.
  • Experience preparing and reporting both GAAP and non-GAAP tax provisions and estimates.
  • Experience with Section 174, R&D credits, Section 162(m), stock-based compensation, and international expansion.
