Job Description

The Senior Data Engineer leads the development, analysis, and maintenance of telematics solutions for the Authority. This role develops and optimizes incoming data sources, models, and architecture to enable predictive/condition-based monitoring, transforming operational data into actionable insight to prevent unplanned downtime. This role builds reliable data systems that identify emerging failure patterns, quantify risk against defined thresholds, and support automated and/or technician-driven mitigations. This role supports reliability improvement through data-driven reliability centered maintenance strategies and continuous performance optimization.

Principal Job Duties
  1. Data Pipeline Development: Develop, automate, and maintain data workflows (ETL - extract, transform, load) from telematic systems using Microsoft Fabric Data Factory and Python. - 20%
  2. Condition Monitoring Development: Organize and deploy data management systems to monitor real-time and historical data from condition monitoring and telematic systems. - 15%
  3. Dataflow Maintenance: Diagnose and resolve data workflows issues and proactively address data performance challenges to minimize downtime and ensure data availability. - 12%
  4. Business Intelligence Development: Design and develop AI-assisted data transformations, semantic models, and Power BI reports to support operational decisions and identify early signs of component degradation or failure. - 10%
  5. Database Management: Build and maintain large-scale relational databases to facilitate ETL processes and ensure quality and integrity of the data. - 10%
  6. Data Integration: Lead efforts to integrate telematics data with enterprise computerized maintenance management systems for automated alerts and maintenance repair record creation. - 8%
  7. Predictive Maintenance: Develop and refine predictive maintenance strategies and thresholds. - 8%
  8. Asset Health / Failure Analysis: Analyze equipment health indicators (vibration, temperature, pressure, fault codes, etc.) to detect abnormal trends. - 7%
  9. Collaboration: Collaborate with reliability engineers, asset engineers, maintenance teams, and IT teams to ensure continuous integration and operations of condition monitoring processes. - 5%
  10. Performance Reporting: Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to asset health and condition monitoring program compliance. - 3%
  11. Continuous Improvement: Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability and asset lifecycle performance. - 2%

Other Duties
  1. Maintain documentation, reports, and dashboards for system health and performance.
  2. Evaluate telematics data against established thresholds, failure modes, and reliability models.
  3. Perform root cause analysis (RCA) on failures and near-misses.
  4. Recommend strategies and processes to enhance data reliability, efficiency, and quality.
  5. Train peers and end users on all tools developed for monitoring assets health and performance.
  6. Research and provide feedback to engineering teams on available condition monitoring technologies, predictive maintenance tools, and opportunities for incorporation on existing equipment.
  • Maintains and promotes awareness and accountability with safety policies and procedures while performing job functions. Promotes a positive safety culture and encourages reporting of safety concerns consistent with our Agency Safety Plan, other regulatory requirements within the Safety Management System and just culture principles.

Responsibilities

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of how telematic systems can be leveraged to improve reliability
  • Knowledge and understanding of at least one programming language (i.e., SQL, Informatica, Python)
  • Knowledge of using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to analyze, query and collect history of maintenance activities

Skills
  • Strong skills in manipulating large data sets using data analysis tools including Microsoft Excel, Tableau, or Power BI.
  • Communication: Strong communication and influencing skills, including the ability to convey high level technical concepts with non-experts and business leaders
  • Presenting: Skill in developing and presenting reports, findings, analysis, and recommendations to different audiences within the Authority.
  • Initiative: Thinks creatively to make improvements to current business processes and initiates creative ways of improving internal customer service.

Abilities
  • Ability to translate business priorities into clear plans, delivery roadmaps, and measurable outcomes
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage multiple responsibilities
  • Ability to organize and summarize large data sets into key findings
  • Ability to be available 24 hours 7 days a week.

Supervisory Responsibility
Not responsible for supervising others.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Reliability, Electrical, Mechanical, or related engineering field (i.e., Data Science).
    • In lieu of a bachelor's degree, the following will be considered: a High School Diploma or GED and four (4) years of experience in an electrical, mechanical maintenance role or data analytics in addition to the experience stated below, will be considered.

Minimum Experience
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in engineering, reliability, maintenance, data science, data analytics, and/or related technical field.
    • Minimum 2 years of experience with ETL (extract, transform, load) processes

Minimum Certification/Licensure

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a reliability engineer role
  • Experience with ETL / data pipeline modernization
  • Experience with Machine Learning
  • Proficiency in either Python, R, SQL, or Dax
  • ASQ-CRE or CMRP certification preferred
  • Experience with mechanical/engineering systes
