About the role
We are looking for a Senior Data Developer (Engineer) to help establish the data foundation for Contact Distributor, Intact's new platform for broker and distributor master data. The platform will replace fragmented legacy sources including the Halcion and Classic mainframes, Microsoft Access databases and Excel-based tools with a trusted, governed view of brokerages, broker codes and organizational hierarchies.
As a key member of the initial product squad, you will play a hands-on role in profiling, cleansing, migrating and integrating legacy data. You will also help embed data quality, governance and operational reliability into the product from day one. You will work in a self-managed, cross-functional product team alongside a Tech Lead, software engineers, architects, business experts and a Product Owner.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on senior data engineer who can independently design, build and operate production-grade data pipelines. You are comfortable working with incomplete information, validating assumptions against real data, taking ownership from discovery through production support, and challenging decisions constructively. You bring ideas forward and collaborate effectively with both technical and business stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Data Modeling: Co-design and implement the target data model with the Data Architect: multi-level hierarchies, effective dating and history, audit/versioning, and legacy-to-golden-record crosswalks. Validate the model against real legacy data rather than assumptions.
- ETL / ELT Development: Design, build and operate batch and incremental ETL/ELT pipelines on AWS, from mainframe extracts, flat files and databases into a layered data lake (raw, standardized, curated). Make pipelines config-driven, so a new source means new configuration, not new code. Build them to be restartable, idempotent and monitored, with clear error handling, orchestration and scheduling.
- Data Migration: Lead extraction, profiling, cleansing, normalization, match/merge and reconciliation through parallel run and cutover.
- Data Quality & Governance: Turn business rules into automated data quality controls. Ensure lineage, cataloging, security and cost control across pipelines.
- Integration: Publish trusted data to downstream consumers, such as EDP for reporting and legacy systems through file-based backfeeds, working closely with the Java backend team.
- Quality & DevOps: Implement unit, integration and automated data tests. Apply CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code principles, in line with security and governance standards.
- Leadership & Collaboration: Provide technical guidance, promote best practices (code reviews, standards, tests, documentation), and challenge decisions with evidence from real data. Contribute to design discussions and sprint planning, and communicate effectively with the Product Owner and stakeholders in a Scrum/Kanban product culture focused on incremental delivery.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
- 8+ years of experience in data engineering / software engineering, including 3+ years in a senior or lead role.
- Proven experience designing, building and running production ETL/ELT pipelines at scale (batch and incremental loads, orchestration, scheduling, error handling and recovery), whether code-based or with ETL tools.
- Demonstrated experience migrating data from legacy/mainframe or packaged systems (extraction, cleansing, normalization, reconciliation, dual-run/cutover).
- Excellent SQL and relational data modeling skills (hierarchies, historization), including performance tuning.
- Strong programming skills in Python or Java for data pipelines, plus AWS ecosystem.
- Solid understanding of CI/CD, version control (Git), automated data testing and observability.
- Demonstrated initiative and leadership: able to challenge, influence and bring others along.
- No Canadian work experience is required; however, candidates must be authorized to work in Canada.
- For candidates located in Quebec, bilingualism in French and English is required due to frequent collaboration with English-speaking colleagues across Canada.
Preferred:
- Experience with AWS data services (Glue, EMR, Step Functions, Athena) and Spark (PySpark or Java/Scala).
- Experience with ETL/integration tools (e.g. Informatica, Talend, DataStage, SSIS) and enterprise schedulers (e.g. Control-M).
- Change data capture (CDC) or event-driven integration experience.
- Knowledge of Master Data Management concepts (golden record, survivorship, reference data).
- Experience with Databricks or Snowflake.
- Experience in the P&C insurance industry, especially broker distribution.
