Role OverviewThe Senior Corporate EHS Manager is Steel Partners' enterprise-level leader for environmental, health, and safety across our operating companies. The role has three parts: independent oversight that every operating company is meeting its EHS obligations, through on-site audits and disciplined follow-up; hands-on support for operating companies with smaller EHS teams; and leadership of programs, regulatory developments, and risk initiatives that cut across the portfolio. Working closely with operating company presidents, plant leaders, site EHS professionals, Corporate Legal, and Risk Management, this person is the single point of accountability for EHS across Steel Partners.
Oversight & Audit- Plan and lead an annual program of on-site EHS audits across our operating company facilities (typically 8-12 sites per year) using Steel Partners' standardized audit protocol, coordinating in advance with site operations, maintenance, and EHS teams
- Require immediate correction of imminently dangerous conditions identified on site (e.g., machine guarding) and hold close-out meetings with site leadership so there are no surprises
- Issue written audit reports to site and operating company leadership and Corporate Legal within 30 days; assign corrective actions in the enterprise tracking system and follow up at 30 and 60 days through closure
- Monitor safety performance across the portfolio, including recordables, lost-time cases, and near misses; identify trends and drive countermeasures with operating company leaders
- Participate in and co-author serious incident investigations, driving root-cause countermeasures that favor engineering and process controls over "more training" fixes
- Review OSHA 300/300A logs for accuracy before annual posting deadlines and maintain the enterprise injury record archive
Operating Company Support & Development- Serve as the technical resource and escalation point for site EHS professionals, particularly at operating companies with smaller EHS teams, and provide interim coverage when an operating company loses its EHS lead
- Mentor and develop EHS professionals across the portfolio; peer review permit renewals, waste manifests, DOT and wastewater submittals; identify training needs and secure leadership support for them
- Lead monthly enterprise EHS calls and chair the annual Steel Partners EHS Council, including budget, agenda, speakers, and logistics
- Support industrial hygiene evaluations by helping sites scope exposure sampling, select qualified vendors, and interpret results against OSHA and NIOSH limits
- Champion the enterprise EHS communication and near-miss reporting platform so sites can share best practices and track countermeasures
Enterprise Programs & Regulatory Compliance- Develop, maintain, and annually review Steel Partners' corporate EHS policies and procedures as part of the Governance, Risk & Compliance (GRC) program
- Track emerging federal, state, local, and international EHS requirements (e.g., PFAS reporting and labeling, California Prop 65 and CARB, greenhouse gas reporting, EU requirements), determine applicability by operating company, and recommend cost-effective compliance solutions
- Oversee environmental permitting and regulatory reporting (e.g., Tier II, TRI, Title V emissions, biennial RCRA hazardous waste, and annual compliance reports); maintain an enterprise compliance calendar and prepare for and attend meetings between operating companies and regulators
- Lead cross-company kaizen events and programs that address common hazards, such as laceration prevention, ergonomics, and contractor safety management
- Manage RCRA obligations at legacy (non-operating) sites, including maintaining certification to sign hazardous waste manifests
- Use AI and data tools to strengthen EHS analytics, root-cause analysis, policy development, and reporting
Risk, Insurance & Cost Management- Partner with Risk Management and Corporate Legal on workers' compensation: review claims, coordinate with the third-party administrator and sites, monitor high-priority and litigated claims, and analyze spend trends year over year
- Serve as Steel Partners' liaison to our property insurer's risk engineers; attend site loss-control visits and drive closure of recommendations, including building the case for capital investment
- Identify enterprise-wide vendor and purchasing programs for safety equipment and PPE that reduce cost and improve protection
