Job Description:Sunlife Health brings together the scale of a mature group benefits business with the pace and innovation of digital health. The Sunlife Health Strategy team focuses on the questions that shape what comes next: where to play, what to build, and how to grow.
As Senior Consultant, you'll take an ambiguous strategic question, turn it into a clear plan of attack, find the answer, and engage senior leaders and decision makers to deliver results. Additionally, you will run the monthly strategy reporting cycle to monitor progress of our biggest priorities and distribute updates directly to the Health leadership team, and ultimately to the President of Sunlife Canada. You'll report to the Director, Strategy, who will act as your coach and thought partner, and work closely with peers across Sunlife Health teams.
What will you do?Planning and sharing strategy: You'll help shape and communicate the overall Sunlife Health strategy at key points during the annual planning cycle. This includes:
- Preparing materials that frame strategic discussions and decisions at leadership offsites
- Developing executive-ready strategy content for presentation to the CEO and the Board
- Building town hall and team materials to cascade the strategy to employees at every level
Leading strategy work: Most of your time goes into the strategic questions that shape our business. You'll take each from a vague question to a recommendation leaders act on.
- Frame the problem. Work out what the real question is, then break a complex or vague problem into specific, answerable questions and testable hypotheses.
- Find the evidence. Plan how to answer each question. Gather research and data, judge which sources are credible, and build analyses in Excel with sound statistical basics.
- Find the insight. Separate insight from information. When you see a gap or a pattern, dig until you understand it.
- Bring stakeholders along. Build trusted relationships with leaders and partners across the business. Learn what each one needs, involve them early, and keep them informed.
- Make the case. Write concise, structured documents and slides for executive readers, and present them with confidence.
- Run the work. Plan and deliver workstreams on time, and keep your leaders and stakeholders updated on progress without being asked.
Running the monthly strategy reporting cycle: For the second week of each month, you'll make sure the President of Sunlife Canada sees an accurate, clear picture of how each strategic initiative is tracking.
- Collectand check metrics for each strategic initiative from metric owners across teams, ensuring accuracy such that figures line up across reports and time periods.
- Find the insight. Look independently at everything at your disposal to spot patterns, risks, and what's driving them.
- Get the story. When a metric is off track, ask the owner why and how it will recover, offering problem-solving support and refining commentary for clarity and brevity.
- Send concise, scannable review emails to Vice Presidents and the Senior Vice President, ahead of the report reaching the President.
Each quarter, you'll also prepare briefing notes that give deeper insight into the areas they care most about. From time to time, expect ad hoc requests, such as adding new metrics or gathering leaders' candid view of where the year will end.
What does success look like in the first year?- By month 3: You own a strategy workstream, have delivered a recommendation that helps a senior leader make a decision, and you've co-run three monthly reporting cycles
- By month 6: Some of your recommendations have shaped Sunlife Health priorities, such as where to invest, what to build, or which partners to pursue, and you own the reporting cycle end-to-end, including the quarterly briefing notes
- By month 12: Leaders start bringing new questions to you first, you've built a working depth in 1-2 new domains, and VPs in the Health leadership team trust the numbers and commentary you send
