Collins Aerospace is looking for an individual to become an experienced subject matter expert (SME) to use their expertise in researching and developing Chemical Vapor Infiltration (CVI) processes to reduce costs and cycle time, reduce process and product variation and help extend the life of carbon and ceramic composite brakes for commercial and military aircraft. The successful candidate should be capable of managing large projects and multiple tasks, as well as defining, identifying and implementing new projects. The successful candidate should be capable of developing a deep understanding of the CVI equipment, process and product interrelationships from both theoretical and hands-on perspectives. This position offers a unique opportunity to work alongside the current CVI SME to accelerate learning.

What You Will Do:

  • Define, develop, and characterize new and existing Chemical Vapor Infiltration processes to meet customer-defined performance requirements for high temperature aircraft brake components and friction applications.
  • Manage multiple R&D projects and project task activities.  Project activities include project plan development, material processing and testing, data collection and analysis, and summarizing information in comprehensive technical reports.
  • Maintain responsibility and accountability for entire task/project.
  • Address problems with multiple variables and unknown solutions.  Demonstrate clear, well thought out logic in proposed approach/solution.
  • Execute projects as a team member with limited oversight/supervision and demonstrate high level of self-initiative and bias for action.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and exercise creativity to develop and/or implement practical solutions and patentable materials and processes.
  • Support production investigations as needed, including collaboration with the shop floor.
  • Communicate and make technical presentations to senior level leadership
  • Able to travel up to 5% domestically and internationally when circumstances permit.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience oran Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience.
  • Experience with process equipment such as control systems, valves, piping, instrumentation, pumps, and vacuum and heating systems for high temperature furnaces.
  • Experience conducting tests on materials and other substances to ensure that performance and quality standards are met.
  • Experience writing technical reports that detail methods and findings.

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • MS/PhD in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science Engineering with focus on Chemical Vapor Infiltration and/or Carbon/Carbon Composites.
  • Lean manufacturing, Six Sigma and formal root cause and corrective action (RCCA) experience.
  • Experience in manufacturing, development, and characterization of fiber-reinforced carbon/carbon, ceramic or ceramic matrix composite materials.
  • Working knowledge of high temperature composite material processing equipment including textiles, composite lay-up, carbonization, CVD / CVI, resin and polymer infiltration, powder processing, melt infiltration, and sintering.
  • General knowledge of advanced material characterization tools/techniques including SEM/EDS, X-Ray Diffraction and Raman Spectroscopy. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The salary range for this role is 86,800 USD - 165,200 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
