About the job you are considering We're looking for a senior backend engineer to help design, migrate, and operate the power ingestion, processing, storage, and lifecycle management of user- and listing-generated media (images, video, and documents) across our platform. This role sits at the intersection of platform migration, data compliance, and service reliability - you'll own multi-quarter modernization efforts while ensuring the pipeline meets strict privacy and trust requirements.
Your role - Drive platform migrations end-to-end - design and execute the migration of legacy media-processing services onto a modern replacement platform, including data-model design, dual-write/backfill strategies, phased cutovers, and legacy cleanup.
- Build event-driven processing pipelines - design Kafka/event-schema-based consumers and producers to power asynchronous media-processing workflows (state machines, checkpoints, retries, idempotency guarantees).
- Own trust & privacy compliance in the data path - implement GDPR-compliant hard-deletion workflows across storage and CDN layers, integrate personal-data-detection and content-integrity checks into upload/creation flows, and build safe-content transformation pipelines for user-uploaded files.
- Integrate third-party media infrastructure - build and maintain integrations with external transcoding/processing vendors, including webhook handling, rate limiting, and failure handling.
- Ensure operational excellence - write on-call runbooks and alerting for critical endpoints, manage service-mesh permissions between internal services, tune consumer/throughput settings, and resolve reliability issues (memory, latency, backpressure).
- Evolve core data models and APIs - design and extend database schemas and GraphQL/API layers supporting media entities, with a focus on idempotency, consistency, and backward compatibility during migrations.
- Partner cross-functionally - work with trust & safety, privacy, and adjacent platform teams to translate compliance and product requirements into pipeline changes
Must have skills - 5+ years of backend software engineering experience, ideally on high-scale distributed systems.
- Strong experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka or equivalent), service meshes, and microservice-to-microservice integration.
- Experience owning large-scale service migrations - designing safe cutover strategies, backfills, and rollback plans.
- Solid grounding in relational/NoSQL data modeling and schema evolution.
- Experience with caching layers (Redis or similar), CDC/change-data-capture pipelines, and cache invalidation strategies.
- Comfort with operational ownership: writing alerts, runbooks, and debugging production incidents.
- Experience with media/video processing pipelines, third-party transcoding vendors, or content-safety systems.
