Full Job Description
About the role
Wander runs two businesses on one engine: Wander.com, the leading marketplace for exceptional vacation homes, and WanderOS (wander.com/os), the operating system property managers use to run direct bookings, guest marketing, distribution, and payments. Money moves through both every day: guest bookings, host payouts, subscriptions, payment processing, and a growing stack of AI products. We need someone to sit inside Finance and own the accounting that keeps all of it accurate, closed on time, and ready for what comes next.
As our L6 Senior Accountant you will own the month-end close and the general ledger, and you will build the accounting foundation for a Series B company gearing up for Series C. This is an individual contributor position reporting to Wander's VP of Finance, working closely with our Accounting Supervisor, our external accounting and tax partners, and the Product and Engineering teams that build the systems the money flows through. You will not just be maintaining systems. You will be building them.
This role is remote across the US. If you are in Austin or San Francisco, we have offices waiting for you (SF is in the Presidio).
Level: L6 Senior Accountant
Years of experience set the level. This posting is for L6 Senior:
• 5 to 8+ years of accounting experience, including time at a high-growth startup, a marketplace or SaaS company, or a public accounting firm serving them.
• You own the close end to end and work with high autonomy in high ambiguity.
• You are the go-to person on technical accounting questions for the finance team and the business.
What you'll do
Own the close and the general ledger
• Own the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close: journal entries, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, intercompany, and balance sheet reconciliations, accurately and on time, every time.
• Prepare financial statements and variance analysis, and keep the books clean enough that any question can be answered in minutes.
• Shorten the close every quarter. Document the process, automate the repeatable parts, and build the controls that let us scale.
Marketplace and SaaS revenue
• Own revenue accounting across the business: guest bookings and host payouts on the marketplace, WanderOS subscriptions and usage, and payment processing, under ASC 606.
• Reconcile payment processor and bank activity (Stripe and partners) to the ledger, and build the reconciliations that keep money movement tight as volume grows.
• Partner with Product and Engineering so new products and pricing launch with the accounting already figured out, not retrofitted.
Operations: AP, AR, and payouts
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, expense management, and payroll journal entries with our Accounting Supervisor.
• Make sure hosts, vendors, and partners get paid correctly and on time, and that every dollar in and out is reconciled.
Audit, tax, and Series C readiness
• Coordinate with external auditors on audit requests, workpapers, and filings, and prepare the company for its next audit cycle.
• Support tax compliance with our external tax partners: income tax, sales and lodging taxes across jurisdictions, 1099s, and multi-state registrations.
• Build the policies, controls, and documentation a Series C investor and a future public company auditor expect to see.
Immerse in the data and put AI to work
• Own and evolve the finance systems stack: the general ledger, close tooling, expense and AP platforms, and integrations with product data.
• Use AI tooling to automate routine reconciliations, flux analysis, and documentation so you can focus on the high-impact work only humans can do.
Communicate and influence
• Translate the numbers for the VP of Finance, the founder, and the leadership team: what happened, why, and what it means.
• Build high-trust relationships across Finance, Product, Engineering, Operations, and our external partners.
Who you are
• 5 to 8+ years of accounting experience, with a significant track record owning a monthly close at a high-growth company. Startup, marketplace, or SaaS experience strongly preferred.
• CPA (or equivalent) strongly preferred. Big 4 or public accounting experience is a plus.
• Deep working knowledge of US GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition. You can research a technical accounting question and write up a defensible position.
• Hands-on with a modern general ledger (NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, or similar), close and reconciliation tooling, and payment processor data (Stripe or similar). Advanced spreadsheet skills; SQL is a plus.
• Data-first analytical thinking: you reconcile to the penny and you can explain the variance.
• Clear written and verbal communication. You can explain an accounting policy to an engineer and a founder in the same meeting.
• High agency in high ambiguity: you figure it out, document it, and move on. You thrive on change rather than endure it, and you keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter).
• Demonstrated fluency with AI tooling in a finance or operations context.
• Hardcore. You care deeply about getting it right, you set a high bar, and you get it done.
Additional assets
• Experience in travel, hospitality, vacation rentals, property management, or another marketplace with two-sided money movement.
• Experience with sales and lodging tax compliance across US states, or with payments and money transmission accounting.
• Experience preparing a company for its first audit, a financing, or a systems migration (for example QuickBooks to NetSuite).
• Prior entrepreneurial experience: you ran a business, founded something, or were early at a startup.
• A personal mantra of owning your own development. Tell us the courses, books, or mentors you used to level up your craft.
Compensation and benefits
• Base salary: $100,000 to $110,000 USD. This is Series B startup market rate for the L6 Senior level, with placement in the range based on experience and location.
• Meaningful equity. You will own a piece of what you build.
• Health, dental, and vision coverage.
• Remote-first across the US, with offices in Austin, TX and San Francisco (Presidio) if you want a desk.
