DescriptionEquity Methods is seeking an organized, analytical, and flexible Senior Accountant to own the firm's core accounting operations. This is a hands-on role on a lean, high-impact team. You will drive the month-end close, maintain the general ledger, and produce reporting used by management and the Board.
The role offers broad range for its level, affording full purview into financial operations: the full close cycle and reconciliations, KPI and Board reporting, budgeting and forecasting, audit and tax preparation, internal controls, and periodic HR and special projects work. The successful candidate will be able to flex between process execution and open-ended analysis.
We are looking for someone who reconciles rather than plugs, who raises the odd variance instead of waiting to be asked about it, and who treats a question from a colleague as a problem to solve rather than a request to fulfill. This is not a role where the work arrives fully specified. Judgment, initiative, and follow-through matter as much as technical accounting skill.
Essential Functions- Own the month-end close. Execute the close on schedule, prepare and review journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations, and deliver high-insight variance analysis.
- Own general ledger integrity. Investigate and resolve reconciling items rather than carrying them forward. Know which accounts carry the most judgment and give them the most scrutiny.
- Produce KPI, scorecard, and Board reporting. Build the recurring reporting package that management and the Board rely on. Accuracy and high polish are critical.
- Maintain the trackers and data behind KPIs and dashboards. Keep source data current and reliable so leaders trust the numbers without re-verifying them. Improve the mechanics over time.
- Deliver supplemental reports and ad hoc analytics for client service teams. Understand what the requester is actually trying to decide, then build the analysis that answers it. Ask good clarifying questions up to hone in on the key issues.
- Contribute to budgeting and forecasting. Maintain the annual and rolling forecast models, load actuals, and prepare the variance narrative.
- Own the preparation side of the annual audit and tax filings. Assemble requested schedules, respond to auditor and tax preparer requests completely and on time, and improve the process year-over-year.
- Maintain and strengthen controls over financial reporting. Execute existing controls consistently and propose improvements where processes are manual or fragile.
- Improve the systems behind the numbers. Take an active role in future system upgrades, AI-enablement initiatives, and other areas of continuous improvement. Help drive vendor accountability and performance management.
- Take on special projects. Insurance renewals, system conversions, office matters, and cross-department initiatives flow through our accounting team.
What Strong Performance Looks LikeSomeone excelling in this seat is recognizable by the following:
- The close runs on schedule without senior leaders having to manage it. Surprises come from you, early, rather than from someone else, late.
- Work is right the first time. Reviewers are checking judgment, not hunting for errors.
- Deliverables to management need light review, not rewriting.
- Clarifying questions get asked early on and proactively.
- Unfamiliar technical questions get researched first. Escalation arrives with a recommendation reflecting heavy thought and intellectual curiosity and rigor.
- Recurring processes get faster, cleaner, and better documented each cycle rather than staying static.
- Colleagues across the firm find you easy to work with and come back on their own.
Required Education and Experience- Bachelor's or Master's degree in accounting or finance.
- 3 or more years of public accounting or private industry accounting experience covering the full close cycle.
- CPA, or active progress toward the CPA, is valued.
Additional Qualifications- Strong command of GAAP and full-cycle accounting. Able to research an unfamiliar technical question, reach a supportable conclusion, and explain it in plain English.
- Accuracy that survives pressure. Detail orientation that holds up under deadline pressure.
- Judgment about materiality. Knows what warrants a deep dive and what does not, and allocates time responsibly.
- Technical fluency. Advanced Excel, plus comfort learning accounting systems and reporting or BI tools. Willingness to automate manual work rather than absorb it.
- AI-forward, not AI slop. Proficient and hungry to unlock better tools on more complex problems, but never in a way that introduces risk or replaces human accountability.
- Clear written communication. Variance commentary should read as an explanation, not a restatement of the numbers.
- Adaptability. Comfort in a fast-paced environment with fluid roles, shifting priorities, and problems that arrive without a full instruction spec attached.
- Collaboration. Builds durable working relationships with colleagues across the firm.
- Discretion. Handles compensation, personnel, and financial information with strict confidentiality at all times.
