Job DescriptionThe successful candidate will report to the DDG 1000 Planning Yard Engineering and Design Manager and be responsible for the management of all Modernization and Repair design work performed by the DDG 1000 Planning Yard design team, and the DDG 51 PSA/PDA teams. Operating under the BIW Business Operating System (BOS), the Section Manager ensures compliance with safety, quality, and performance standards while coordinating with other key stakeholders to meet overall milestones.
Key Responsibilities
- Safety Leadership:
- Ensures compliance with safety requirements and initiatives and provides oversight of the safety performance for DDG 1000 Teams in Maine and Pascagoula, MS, and PSA/PDA Teams wherever they operate.
- Project Execution:
- Oversight and management of Ship Alteration (ShipAlt) Installation Drawing (SID) development, 3D and 2D, including cost and schedule adherence and reporting.
- Oversight and management of Repair and Maintenance Work Specification development.
- Oversight and management of development for Post Delivery Availability and Post Shakedown Availability Tasks and Work Specifications.
- Approval and/or development of Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) cost estimates for tasked work.
- Oversight and management of modernization design ship checks.
- D86 Design Management
- Development and presentation of performance metrics at Weekly Engineering, Program Update, andDesign Status Meetings.
- Development and presentation of design team performance reports, program self-assessments, and briefings in program reviews.
- Direct supervision of the PSA and DDG 1000 Design Supervisors and Project Coordinators.
- Training and Development:
- Oversight and management of design quality, training, and personnel development.
- Team Collaboration and Communication:
- Coordination and collaboration both within internal teams and with external teams.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Responsible for fostering an environment of continuous process improvement in the Design organization.
Required/Preferred Education/Training
- BS Degree in Engineering or related technical field required.
- Strong knowledge of DDG 51 and DDG 1000 Ship Class preferred.
- Strong knowledge of multiple design disciplines.
- Strong knowledge of design scheduling, budgeting, and process.
- Familiarity with Earned Value Management System (EVMS).
Required/Preferred Experience
- 10 years of experience in the construction, modernization, and repair of US Navy or Commercial ships preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience preferred.
- Familiarity with ShipAlt Installation Drawing (SID) development process preferred.
- Experience with design development in CATIA and AutoCAD.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong Microsoft Access, Excel, and Project skills preferred.
- Ability to multi-task and manage multiple priorities.
- Must enjoy a dynamic, fast-paced, rapid response environment.
