Scientist 3 – Translational Medicine, Oncology
We are seeking a dedicated and independent Scientist 3 to lead lab-based translational research and discovery efforts in lung and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers.
Key Responsibilities:
This is a hands-on, laboratory-based position that offers the chance to collaborate closely with teams across Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) - including Research Oncology, Computational Sciences, and Translational Genomics and Proteomics. As an integral member of this cross-functional team, you will:
- Design and execute experiments to validate biological and therapeutic hypotheses derived from non-clinical, clinical, and real-world data
- Synthesize, analyze, and interpret experimental and computational data in collaboration with experts from other functions
- Elucidate mechanisms of action and therapeutic resistance to tumor microenvironment and tumor targeted therapies (eg next-generation checkpoint inhibitors and antibody drug conjugates) to guide patient selection, pharmacodynamic biomarker assessment, combination treatment strategies, and next-generation target identification
- Identify, evaluate, and validate innovative cell-based, biochemical, and multi-omic assays-including single-cell and functional genomics technologies- to enable scalable hypothesis testing
- Proactively establish new internal and external collaborations to access emerging technologies, datasets, and analytical methods that fuel translational innovation
Qualifications
- Education: Ph.D. degree in Cancer Biology, Cell Biology, Immunology, or related disciplines. Candidates with a BA/BS or MS degree in similar fields, with combined 6+ or 4+ additional years of related experiences, respectively, will also be considered
- Scientific expertise: deep understanding of cancer biology, cancer immunology, and mechanisms of action and resistance to immunotherapies and/or targeted therapies. An understanding of lung and GI cancer disease biology, tumor 6immune interactions, and key oncogenic signaling pathways would be advantageous.
- Technical proficiency: proven ability to independently lead hands-on, lab-based research and to develop, optimize, and apply fit-for-purpose experimental assays using relevant preclinical models and human samples. Multidisciplinary expertise in complementary approaches such as primary immune and/or tumor cell isolation and culture, immune-cell functional and tumor-killing assays, target-engagement and pharmacodynamic biomarker assays, multiparameter flow cytometry, and 2D/3D tumor microenvironment models, including ex vivo and in vivo approaches where appropriate. Strong interest in and experience applying emerging translational technologies 6such as single-cell and multi-omic profiling, spatial approaches, advanced functional assays, and other novel platforms 6to address mechanistic and biomarker questions is highly desirable.
- Possess a rigorous and creative approach to experimental design and problem-solving. Highly organized, detail-oriented and adaptable in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualification:
Proficient with analysis of high-throughput data, such as multiomics, single cell and spatial transcriptomics datasets
