Full Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Highway Engineer to lead and manage transportation projects within our Fairfax Transportation - Highway Group. This role involves technical leadership, project management, and client coordination for complex roadway and multimodal transportation projects across the Mid-Atlantic region and nationally.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design and development of highway and transportation projects, including:
    • Roadway alignments, geometric design, and roadside safety
    • Multi-modal facilities (pedestrian, bicycle, transit)
    • Maintenance of traffic and construction staging plans
  • Prepare and review construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports
  • Ensure compliance with AASHTO, FHWA, and state DOT standards
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for clients and stakeholders
  • Support business development through proposal preparation and client presentations

Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Must be certified as a Professional Engineer in Virginia or able to obtain within 6 months through comity from another state
  • Must have 11-15 years of relevant job experience related to highway engineering
  • Experience with design software tools such as MicroStation, InRoads, OpenRoads and AutoCAD preferred
  • Experience designing and managing highway tasks and projects and preparing contract documents
  • Knowledge of AASHTO, FHWA, and other relevant highway design guidelines, criteria, and standards required; knowledge of MDOT SHA guidelines, criteria, and standards preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Positive attitude and willingness to work cooperatively with others
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally/written at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments

The expected compensation range for this position is $140,000.00 - $215,000.00. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience.
