The Roadway Design Engineer will be responsible for leading and supporting the design of roadway improvement projects from concept through construction documents. The ideal candidate brings a strong technical foundation in highway design, hands-on experience with OpenRoads Designer (ORD), and a working knowledge of North Carolina standards and processes. Responsibilities include: • Develop roadway design plans, profiles, cross-sections, and construction documents for transportation and multi-modal projects • Perform horizontal and vertical alignment design, superelevation, and grading using OpenRoads Designer (ORD) • Coordinate with utility, drainage, and structural disciplines throughout project development • Prepare and review design calculations, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimates • Ensure compliance with state and/or municipal design standards, policies, and project-specific requirements • Collaborate with project managers, clients, and agency stakeholders on project deliverables and schedules • Assist in preparation of permits, right-of-way documents, and technical specifications Requirements • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering • Minimum 5 years of experience in roadway/transportation design • Proficiency in OpenRoads Designer (ORD) is required • Experience with NCDOT projects and design standards • Familiarity with AASHTO design guidelines and roadway geometric design principles • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines Preferred Qualifications • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or active pursuit of licensure • Experience working directly on state-funded and municipal transportation projects • Knowledge of drainage design and utility coordination as it relates to roadway projects • Familiarity with MicroStation and other Bentley design tools Benefits • Competitive salary commensurate with experience • Full suite of benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k) match, PTO) • Flexible work environment (hybrid options available) • Direct collaboration with firm principals and decision-makers • Opportunities for professional development, licensure support, and advancement • Meaningful, long-term career path in a values-driven firm If you're ready to contribute your professional experience and be part of an innovative team, we'd love to hear from you!
