The
RN Trauma Program Manager provides clinical and operational leadership for the trauma program, coordinating a seamless continuum of care from prehospital through rehabilitation. An experienced trauma RN, this role oversees evidence-based practice standards, performance and process improvement, trauma registry data and analytics, and the development of cost-effective systems of care. The program manager partners with the trauma medical director, multidisciplinary teams, and external agencies to ensure integrated services, adherence to program standards, and effective liaison across stakeholders. The role also leads staff, professional, and community education-including injury prevention-supports research, and mentors clinicians to advance trauma expertise and patient- and family-centered outcomes.
ResponsibilitiesPerformance Improvement, Quality, and Verification: - Identifies opportunities for performance improvement through rounds, PI filter monitoring, case reviews, and stakeholder feedback, ensuring timely loop closure
- Conducts concurrent and retrospective reviews of medical records and registry data to evaluate program performance and patient outcomes
- Leads or participates in Trauma Committee, Morbidity & Mortality Case Reviews, and Performance Improvement and Patient Safety activities
- Prepares the trauma program for verification/designation surveys by developing reports, demonstrating compliance with standards, and participating in survey activities
- Provides follow-up and feedback to internal teams and external partners, including referring entities and EMS providers, regarding trauma care delivery
Clinical Leadership and Expert Practice: - Serves as a role model for expert clinical nursing in trauma care, providing consultation and presence during resuscitations to facilitate high-quality, efficient patient care delivery
- Coordinates the continuum of trauma care by developing, implementing, reviewing, and revising trauma policies, protocols, and practice management guidelines
- Collaborates with physicians, nursing, and ancillary services to achieve optimal outcomes and ensure continuity of care from emergency presentation through discharge
- Acts as an interdepartmental liaison to promote effective multidisciplinary teamwork and consistent trauma care standards across units
- Guides program initiatives and communicates trauma policies, procedures, and goals to stakeholder
Trauma Registry, Data Management, and Analytics: - Oversees trauma registry operations, including data collection, abstraction, coding, entry, validation, and quality control
- Ensures data accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with recognized trauma data standards and definitions
- Analyzes trauma data to produce routine and ad hoc reports on volumes, PI filters, outcomes, and benchmarking (e.g., TQIP) to inform decision-making
- Coordinates data exchange with approved local, state, and national systems and maintains required submissions
- Generates summaries and dashboards to support quality improvement, research, and administrative reporting
Education, Outreach, and Injury Prevention: - Assesses and addresses educational needs of staff, patients, and families
- Coordinates trauma-related education, in-services, and continuing education
- Provides and supports trauma education for clinical teams, including courses such as TNCC, and facilitates interdisciplinary trauma nursing reviews
- Plans and participates in EMS and community trauma education, outreach, and injury prevention initiatives informed by trauma data
- Collaborates with internal and external partners to align education with program objectives and regulatory expectations
- Contributes to readiness and preparedness activities related to trauma care across the organization
QualificationsEducation: - Graduate on an accredited nursing program (must receive BSN within 12 years of hire)
Experience: - 3 years of clinical emergency/trauma/critical care nursing experience caring for the trauma patient population (including pediatric and acute care), with proven trauma care experience
- 3 years experience with trauma program operations, including understanding of the state Trauma System, working with the trauma registry for data entry and reporting, and collaborating with community and state agencies and groups
Licenses and Certifications: - Valid RN license in the state of practice, including eligibility under a NLC multistate license
- BLS, ACLS, and PALS required
- Trauma Nursing Core Course Instructor (TNCC) is required within 180 days of employment
