Position SummaryWe are hiring a Regional Business Controller focused on our RoadGuard entity that span the Western US. This is not just a steward of financial accuracy, but a strategic thinker capable of scaling systems, developing people, and driving insight through operational data. This is a high-impact leadership role at the heart of our finance operations-responsible for guiding the accounting team, owning technical accounting, and partnering cross-functionally with leaders across the business. This hire is crucial to supporting GSI's ongoing growth, including post-acquisition integrations, internal control maturation, multi-entity and joint-venture consolidation, and continuous margin-focused decision making. This role is based in our Westminster, Colorado office, with weekly on-site attendance at review meetings in Erie, Colorado, as well as weekly engagement with additional teams across the region.
Key Responsibilities- Take a hands-on role in project controls, project reviews, and related processes in partnership with operations leaders.
- Serve as a key advisor to operations leadership on leading and trending indicators that drive company performance.
- Lead and continuously improve core accounting functions: month-end close, GL management, audits, reconciliations, and internal controls.
- Own percentage-of-completion revenue recognition across multi-month, multi-entity projects-ensuring cost-to-cost calculations correctly reflect labor versus materials/equipment cost mix, and applying adjustments (e.g., excluding significant uninstalled materials) so reported margin isn't distorted by procurement timing.
- Investigate and clearly explain cost and margin variances, including project under/overruns, distinguishing genuine performance shifts from timing, reclassification, or reporting artifacts before results reach leadership or the board.
- Conduct and guide technical accounting research, documentation, and policy updates.
- Oversee accounting execution for complex transaction cycles and key accounts.
- Serve as a lead partner in integrating acquired entities into GSI's financial systems and chart of accounts, including post-close consolidation and intercompany elimination logic across multi-entity and joint-venture structures.
- Ensure trend, margin, and YTD reporting use consistent, comparable time periods and definitions across entities-catching and correcting misalignments before they reach executive reporting.
- Collaborate with FP&A and operational leaders on cash flow, budgeting, forecasting, margin tracking, and per-project financial accuracy.
- Build and maintain reliable, well-documented reporting workbooks and data-refresh processes, reducing manual, error-prone steps in WIP and month-end reporting.
- Support tax planning and compliance in coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
- Drive automation, systems improvements, and applied AI use to streamline the month-end close and reporting cycle.
- Prepare key reporting for executive decision-making and board visibility.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on percentage-of-completion / cost-to-cost revenue recognition for long-term or multi-period contracts, and a working understanding of how cost mix (labor versus materials/equipment) affects reported margin.
- Track record of designing and improving accounting processes and systems.
- Advanced Excel proficiency.
- Ability to travel occasionally across the Western US to regional offices and/or job sites.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to distinguish real performance shifts from timing or reporting artifacts in variance analysis.
- Proven ability to unite cross-functional, diverse teams around shared performance goals.
- Experience developing accounting talent and building team capability.
Preferred Qualifications- CPA certification.
- Experience with Vista by Viewpoint or a similar construction/contractor ERP, including multi-entity company-code structures and month-end consolidation.
- Experience with TAD or similar WIP-tracking/data-refresh tools feeding into an ERP.
- Joint venture accounting / proportionate consolidation experience.
- Self-starter in developing and applying AI tools for augmented business understanding and reporting support.
- Experience running a complete month-end close cycle end-to-end.
- Prior use of Smartsheet Server.
- Background in public accounting or fast-scaling private companies.
- Hands-on experience with M&A integration.
