What Your Job Will Be LikeSandia's Inertial Confinement Fusion program is seeking a Cryogenic Research & Development Engineer to develop and engineer advanced innovative cryogenic systems for thermonuclear fusion experiments at the Z machine, the largest pulsed power machine on earth. You will design, develop, analyze, and document fusion target hardware throughout the full life cycle from concept to fielding experiments on Z.
The ICF Development and Experiments group leads the development and fielding of cryogenic and gas systems at Sandia's Z facility. These systems are essential for Sandia's national security missions and support cutting edge research for the Department of Energy covering a range of topics including thermonuclear fusion. In this position you will be part of an experienced cryogenic/gas fill team, be responsible for solving challenging cryogenic research and development problems and developing unique platforms that enable advances in thermonuclear fusion research and pulsed power platforms. You will also work closely with a large team of scientists and engineers in a fast-paced research and development environment where we actively try to push the forefront of scientific discovery.
On any given day, you may be called to:
- Design, develop, analyze, and document cryogenic hardware throughout the full life cycle from concept to fielding experiments on Z.
- Direct and mentor a multi-disciplinary team of technicians that field cryogenic and gas fill capabilities in the Z Machine facility.
- Work with scientists to understand technical requirements for cryogenic configurations
- Engineer innovative solutions to solve technical challenges
- Assist and direct as needed the assembly, configuration, modification, refurbishment of supporting cryogenic systems and laboratory test spaces
- Analyze experimental data and discern important conclusions from integrated experiments
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite. Relocation will be provided for those that qualify.
