Quality Engineering II - Payments

Senior hands-on quality engineering leadership for Payments Global Transfer current state applications and modernization initiatives

Role objective: Lead a team of approximately 5-6 Quality Engineers while remaining hands-on in automation development, test architecture, estimation, work allocation, and delivery. Ensure scalable automated test coverage across the Payments Global Transfer application portfolio.

Role Summary

The Quality Engineering II - Payments role is a senior, hands-on player-coach position responsible for leading quality practices across Payments Global Transfer current state applications and modernization initiatives. The role combines strategic quality planning, team leadership, delivery coordination, and concise stakeholder communication with direct contribution to automated testing, framework development, complex problem solving, release readiness, and continuous improvement.

The successful candidate will guide a team of Quality Engineers, provide reliable estimates, delegate and balance work across QE resources and partner teams, build team capability, and establish clear accountability for reliable automated regression coverage across APIs, microservices, integrations, and critical end-to-end payment journeys.

Job Accountabilities
  • Lead, coach, and provide hands-on technical direction to approximately 5-6 Quality Engineers, including automation development, code reviews, troubleshooting, estimation, work allocation, and complex test execution.
  • Mentor team members in automation design, coding practices, debugging, test strategy, delivery ownership, and Payments Global Transfer domain knowledge.
  • Define and implement an automation-first, risk-based quality engineering strategy with consistent standards, reusable patterns, quality gates, and working agreements across the Payments portfolio.
  • Partner with developers, business systems analysts, product owners, architects, and delivery leads to embed quality into requirements, acceptance criteria, solution design, development, deployment, and release planning.
  • Own the application and service test coverage inventory and roadmap, including named QE ownership, documented test strategies, automation coverage, execution frequency, dependencies, and prioritized gaps.
  • Design, build, maintain, and evolve a common API and integration automation framework and repository model with reusable libraries, data builders, service clients, mocks, and application-level ownership.
  • Ensure appropriate automated coverage for functional, negative, security, contract, integration, regression, boundary, failure, idempotency, resiliency, and state-transition scenarios.
  • Lead automated testing across REST APIs, microservices, event-driven flows, databases, and downstream integrations, including critical payment, recipient, enrollment, lookup, foreign exchange, vendor connection, scheduling, and notification journeys.
  • Integrate reliable and maintainable automated suites into CI/CD pipelines or approved scheduled execution processes, with minimum coverage expectations and actionable quality gates for new services, enhancements, defect fixes, and releases.
  • Establish consistent QE estimation, resource allocation, code review, defect-triage, reporting, and delivery practices across the team and partner groups.
  • Track and report automation coverage, suite reliability, regression duration, defect leakage, failed quality gates, test debt, release risk, and mitigation progress through a concise dashboard and review cadence.
  • Provide evidence-based release-readiness recommendations supported by clear quality metrics, known risks, mitigation plans, and traceability.
  • Drive continuous improvement that reduces prioritized automation gaps and test debt while strengthening test effectiveness, execution speed, observability, maintainability, team capability, delivery ownership, and cross-team collaboration.

Experience and/or Education

Preferred qualifications include:
  • Progressive experience in Quality Engineering, software testing, or test automation for enterprise applications.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership to QEs or SDETs while remaining hands-on.
  • Strong experience testing APIs, microservices, distributed systems, and complex system integrations.
  • Proficiency in Java-based test automation using REST Assured and JUnit or TestNG, or equivalent enterprise-grade frameworks.
  • Hands-on experience with Postman and automated collection execution using Newman or equivalent tooling.
  • Experience with OpenAPI or Swagger specifications, API contract validation, Git-based workflows, and CI/CD integration.
  • Ability to estimate work, decompose testing scope, allocate tasks, manage dependencies, and communicate delivery risk.
  • Strong debugging, problem-solving, stakeholder communication, coaching, and documentation skills.
  • Experience working in Agile and DevOps delivery environments.
  • Experience in banking, payments, money movement, financial services, or another highly regulated environment.
  • Experience testing Kafka or other event-driven architectures and validating asynchronous processing.
  • Experience with Testcontainers, contract testing, service virtualization, and test data management.
  • Experience with performance and resiliency testing tools such as JMeter, k6, LoadRunner, or approved equivalents.
  • Experience with observability platforms such as Splunk, Dynatrace, or comparable log and telemetry tools.
  • Working knowledge of Cucumber or BDD for selected business-critical end-to-end journeys, without using feature files as the default layer for every API test.
  • Experience supporting API certification, governance, security testing, or penetration-testing readiness.

Additional Information
  • API automation: Java, REST Assured, and JUnit/TestNG to build maintainable regression suites for services and integrations.
  • Exploratory testing: Postman to validate APIs, investigate defects, and prototype scenarios before automation.
  • Pipeline execution: CI/CD, Newman, or framework runners to execute automated suites as deployment and release quality gates.
  • Contract validation: OpenAPI/Swagger to validate schemas, compatibility, required fields, and expected API behavior.
  • Integration environments: Mocks, service virtualization, and Test containers to create repeatable tests when dependencies or shared environments are constrained.
  • Business journeys: Cucumber/BDD, where valuable, to express a limited set of critical cross-service journeys in business-readable form.
  • Diagnostics: Logs, traces, and observability tools to identify the causes of test failures and distinguish product, environment, and automation issues.
