Full Job Description
Inpatient Psychiatrist - Inspira Bridgeton & Mannington

CFG Health Network is seeking a full-time Psychiatrist to provide inpatient psychiatric care at Inspira Medical Center Bridgeton, with additional court-related responsibilities at Inspira Medical Center Mannington.

This position offers the opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary behavioral health team caring for a high-acuity inpatient population. The psychiatrist will share the daily patient census with an experienced Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), collaborate with residents when assigned to the service, and participate in treatment planning and discharge coordination.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provide psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and medication management for an inpatient behavioral health population.
  • Manage a daily caseload of approximately 15-16 patients, generally consisting of 1-2 new admissions and 10-15 follow-up visits.
  • Complete initial psychiatric evaluations for STCF admissions. APNs may independently complete voluntary admissions.
  • Conduct daily rounds and participate in daily multidisciplinary treatment team meetings.
  • Collaborate closely with nursing, social work, therapy, case management, psychology, utilization review and other members of the treatment team.
  • Provide clinical guidance and oversight to psychiatry residents when residents are assigned to the service.
  • Complete timely and accurate documentation in Epic.
  • Participate in discharge planning with the multidisciplinary team; social work coordinates the formal discharge plan.
  • Complete physician peer-to-peer reviews when required. Routine insurance/utilization reviews are handled by support staff.
  • Communicate with patients' families and other supports as clinically appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with hospitalist/medical services and hospital security when medical or behavioral emergencies arise.

Schedule & Practice Model

The psychiatrist is generally expected to be available between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with typical onsite hours approximately 9:00 AM-4:00 PM.

The physician does not need to remain physically onsite for the entire availability window once rounds, patient care and other necessary onsite responsibilities have been completed. Documentation is preferably completed onsite; however, remote completion of documentation can be accommodated when appropriate.

Late-day admissions do not necessarily require the psychiatrist to remain onsite. Admissions must be completed within 24 hours and may be evaluated the following day when the 24-hour requirement can still be met.

Physician & APN Coverage Model

Bridgeton has one full-time APN assigned to the unit, as well as psychiatry residents when present. Mannington also has one full-time APN.

The psychiatrist and APN share the patient census, with generally even assignments. APNs manage their assigned follow-up patients independently and may complete initial evaluations for voluntary admissions.

The psychiatrist is specifically responsible for completing STCF admission evaluations.

Mannington Court Responsibilities

In addition to the primary clinical responsibilities at Bridgeton, the psychiatrist will provide court-related coverage for involuntary patients at Inspira Mannington.

Court is held onsite at Mannington every other Thursday and generally lasts approximately two hours. The psychiatrist will:

  • Evaluate Mannington patients scheduled for court.
  • Prepare required court documentation approximately two days before the hearing.
  • Complete required certifications.
  • Attend court onsite and provide testimony regarding the patient's clinical status and progress.
  • Typically manage 2-4 court cases per session, with up to approximately six possible cases.

At this time, the psychiatrist's Mannington responsibilities are focused on court assessments and court appearances rather than ongoing management of the Mannington census. Routine follow-up care at Mannington is handled by the unit APN.

Travel time between Bridgeton and Mannington is considered work time, and mileage is reimbursed in accordance with CFG policy. Another psychiatrist provides court coverage when the assigned physician is on PTO.

Call & Weekend Coverage

The position includes one full weekend or two weekend days per month.

Weekend coverage is onsite at the assigned hospital. The psychiatrist should be available between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM and is responsible for seeing the assigned patient census and completing new admissions. Weekend census is generally comparable to weekday census, although there are typically fewer or no discharges.

Evening/night call is generally covered by APNs, although psychiatrists may participate if interested. Evening call is remote/from home and covers multiple Inspira sites. The on-call provider may receive multiple calls during the evening.

If providing restraint coverage, the physician may be required to report onsite when clinically necessary.

Clinical Environment

This is a collaborative, team-based inpatient setting serving patients with high-acuity psychiatric needs. Successful physicians in this role should be comfortable:

  • Managing an inpatient census of approximately 15-16 patients.
  • Working closely with a multidisciplinary treatment team.
  • Managing STCF/involuntary admissions and associated documentation.
  • Collaborating with and providing guidance to psychiatry residents when present.
  • Working alongside an APN who independently manages assigned patients.
  • Managing the clinical and legal responsibilities associated with involuntary psychiatric treatment.
  • Practicing in a fast-paced environment where communication and teamwork are essential.

Qualifications

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry.
  • Active or eligible for New Jersey medical licensure.
  • Current DEA and CDS registrations or eligibility to obtain.
  • Experience in inpatient psychiatry preferred.
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
  • Comfort working with high-acuity psychiatric patients and involuntary treatment populations.
