Position Description

I. Primary Function: The Project Manager works closely with the Project Superintendent to plan, execute, monitor, coordinate, control, and close heavy/highway construction projects. The PM is ultimately responsible to ensure that resources are scheduled and deployed so that all safety requirements, contract requirements, client expectations, and profitability forecasts are being met or exceeded. The PM must evaluate contracts and/or agreements, assess deliverables, and then communicate, delegate, and document responsibility for those deliverables to all other Plote team members, subcontractors, and consultants.

II. Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify, communicate, and document all project responsibilities within the project team.
  • Work closely with the Project Estimator to understand the budget and scope of work.
  • Conduct regular project team meetings and manage subcontractor performance with a keen emphasis on budget control and time management.
  • Identify job problems and issues, initiate documented action, verify implementation of solutions
  • Interact with clients, architects, engineers and local jurisdictions to incorporate project objectives, schedules, permits, costs, etc.
  • Manages project administration and communications including, but not limited to, RFIs, submittals, meeting minutes, progress billing, logs and reports
  • Utilize project management tools to track project costs
  • Prepare project specific financial projections as necessary.
  • Create daily, weekly and long-term detailed progress schedules based on input from project and general superintendents.
  • Create and/or review detailed critical path schedules for submittal and acceptance by owners in P6 or equivalent.
  • Manages and tracks schedule progress and maintains constant awareness of schedule status.
  • Identifies, notifies, documents and negotiates time extension requests or schedule recovery with owners and their reps.


III. Additional Responsibilities:

  • Attend all owner pre-construction meetings
  • Participate in estimating handoff meetings.
  • Develop, price, prepare and present change order proposals.
  • Manages and reviews progress pay requests to ensure all available measures are taken to maintain positive cash flow.
  • Identifies extra work and manages negotiations and payments for extra work with owner's reps.
  • Identifies and tracks project issues that have significant, or potentially significant impacts on cost. Manages the resolution of these issues.
  • Escalates appropriate issues to the VP of Project Management or VP of Operations
  • Prepare and facilitate pre-construction strategy and execution meetings
  • Be on call in winter to supervise snow removal operations outside of working hours when required.
  • Answer phone calls during non-work hours, overnight, and weekends to handle job emergency communication.

  • Minimum of 5 years of heavy highway or airport experience in projects ranging from $5-$20 million
  • Knowledge of construction industry practices and procedures
  • Detailed, organized, accurate
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task across several projects
  • Proficient in Outlook, Excel, Word, MS Project, Viewpoint and HCSS HeavyJob
  • Working knowledge of estimating and scheduling software
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-directed and motivated
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to complete projects on time and on budget
  • Demonstrated ability to complete or supervise completion of detailed progress schedules including CPM schedules.
  • Strong negotiation skills


V. Mandatory Physical Requirements

  • able to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently.

VI. Education Level / Required Certification:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or equivalent related experience.


VII. Problem Solving:

  • Must be able to resolve scheduling conflicts; work effectively with all levels of field personnel in order to successfully complete the project on time and on budget. Must be able to accurately project future job costs and explain deviations


VIII. Internal/External Contacts:

Internal: Communicates with project superintendents daily regarding project status, productivity, costs, planning, and scheduling. Communicate with General Superintendents weekly concerning plans, schedules, and issues. Communicate with the VP of Project Management daily about major project issues. Meets with the Contract Administrator weekly to discuss change orders and pay estimates. Discusses pay requests and subcontract payments at least twice per month with project accountants. Communicates monthly schedules with materials production managers for aggregates, asphalt, and concrete. Coordinates with the PM Administrator weekly regarding submittals, sub approvals, etc.

External: Communicates daily with resident engineers, construction managers or owner's reps, owners, and other stakeholders about plans, schedules, issues, payments, and disputes. Communicate weekly (at a minimum) with subcontractors regarding weekly schedules. Communicates regularly with critical material sources.
