Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,540 per month
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; schedule may vary based on operational needs and may include occasional evenings and weekends in support of orientation and transition programs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Student Leader Development & Program Leadership
- Coordinate the recruitment, selection, onboarding, and training of approximately 40 Orientation Captains and Orientation Leaders.
- Recommend student employees for hire and, when necessary, recommend appropriate corrective action or separation in consultation with the Senior Coordinator and Director.
- Develop and implement training that prepares student leaders to support incoming students and families during orientation and transition programs.
- Develop student staff work schedules and assign duties based on orientation and program needs.
- Provide day-to-day work direction, coaching, feedback, and clarification of performance and conduct expectations.
- Monitor student staff performance and provide input into performance evaluations in accordance with department and university practices. Develop learning opportunities for student leaders in areas such as communication, conflict resolution, peer support, student wellbeing, customer service, campus resources, and referral practices.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of student-leader training and recommend improvements based on program needs and assessment results.
Orientation and Transition Planning & Implementation
- Plan and coordinate orientation and transition programs in collaboration with the Senior Coordinator, Director, and campus partners.
- Develop program learning outcomes, activities, and assessment strategies that support incoming students' transition to the university.
- Coordinate New Student Convocation, welcome activities, and other transition experiences, including program logistics, campus partnerships, communications, and implementation.
- Analyze participant feedback, program assessment results, and identified student needs to recommend improvements to orientation and transition programming.
- Research and recommend student engagement activities that support peer connection, belonging, student success, and continued transition throughout the first year.
- Serve as a program lead during assigned orientation and transition programs, coordinating student staff and addressing operational or student-service issues within established guidelines.
- Collaborate with Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, colleges, and other university departments to coordinate information, resources, and services for incoming students.
New Student Enrollment Support
- Provide information and guidance to incoming students regarding orientation, transition, and enrollment-related processes.
- Identify the nature of student concerns, explain applicable university processes and requirements, and assist students in identifying appropriate resources and available courses of action.
- Refer students to academic advising, enrollment services, student support programs, or other campus resources as appropriate.
- Collaborate with Academic Affairs, college advising units, and other campus partners to address recurring orientation and transition-related student issues.
Administrative Support
- Perform administrative tasks related to orientation leader supervision and orientation program planning, including room reservations, procurement card reconciliation, IT Security/ATI review requests, purchase order requisitions, and budget ledger entries.
Student Affairs/University Committees
- Represent New Student Programs and Family Engagement on a variety of divisional and campus-wide committees.
Graduate Intern Management
- In partnership with other professional staff, recruit, interview, recommend for hire, train, and provide work direction to seasonal graduate student interns.
- Provide task direction, work assignments, performance feedback, and clarification of conduct expectations; recommend appropriate corrective action in consultation with professional staff as needed.
- Ensure graduate interns execute their responsibilities appropriately and effectively as representatives of the department, division, and university.
- Ensure graduate interns follow university employment guidelines and comply with labor law.
QUALIFICATIONS: - Bachelor's Degree - Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
- Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
- A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
- Driver's license, Valid and in State
- Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
- General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
- Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: - Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, education, or a related field.
- Experience coordinating orientation, transition, student success, or related Student Services programs.
- Experience training and providing work direction to student employees or peer leaders.
- Experience with program planning, event coordination, assessment, and evaluation. Knowledge of student development and learning theory as related to student transition and student success.
- Experience collaborating with multiple departments or campus partners to coordinate student programs and services.
- Strong written, oral, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of university academic and enrollment processes and policies.

The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $5,540 and maximum $7,893 per month.
