Overview

We are seeking a Principal UX Designer to join our Philadelphia PA team. They will operate at both the strategic and execution levels-partnering with senior leadership to shape direction while guiding teams to deliver exceptional product experiences. This role sits upstream of traditional design, focusing on structuring ambiguous problems, driving alignment, and enabling better product decisions.

This role requires proven consensus management, the ability to work through gray, ambiguous problem spaces, and excellent stakeholder management across product, engineering, and business functions.

Responsibilities

Strategic Facilitation & Alignment
  • Facilitate design thinking workshops with cross-functional senior stakeholders to drive alignment and accelerate decision-making
  • Translate abstract strategies into clear, testable product directions through rapid prototyping and visualization
  • Lead teams through ambiguity, structuring complex, undefined problem spaces into actionable plans
  • Drive consensus across diverse stakeholders, aligning business, product, and technical perspectives
  • Create durable artifacts (frameworks, vision concepts, decision tools) that guide downstream execution

Design Leadership & Execution
  • Define and drive end-to-end experience strategy across multiple products
  • Ensure design quality and coherence from concept through delivery
  • Partner closely with research and engineering to balance user needs, business goals, and technical constraints
  • Contribute to and scale design systems and UX standards

Team Development & Influence
  • Mentor and coach designers, elevating strategic thinking and facilitation skills
  • Strengthen UX as a strategic discipline within the organization
  • Establish team practices that support alignment, validation, and continuous learning

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Science, Computer Science, or a related discipline
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 for each degree earned
  • 10+ years of UX/product design experience, including leadership at the principal or staff level
  • Proven ability to lead senior-level, cross-functional workshops and drive alignment on strategic initiatives
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and influence skills, with a track record of operating effectively without direct authority
  • Demonstrated ability to bring clarity and direction to complex, ambiguous ("gray") problem spaces
  • Portfolio reflecting measurable business impact and strategic contributions to product outcomes
  • Deep expertise in interaction design, systems thinking, and rapid prototyping
  • Proficiency with modern design and collaboration tools (e.g., Figma, Miro)
  • Willingness to travel to Coopersburg, PA at key points in the product cycle (minimum once per week)
  • You are authorized to work in the U.S. and will not require Lutron to sponsor you for any work visa, such as an H-1B, either immediately or at any time in the future. Lutron does not offer work visa sponsorship for this position.


Preferred:
  • Experience with design sprint or structured facilitation methodologies
  • Background in IoT, connected products, or physical/digital ecosystems
  • Experience evolving UX from execution to strategic partner within an organization
  • Familiarity with product strategy, go-to-market, or business design
