Overview

A nationally recognized building-systems engineering consultancy is seeking a Principal/Senior Mechanical Engineer to join its Honolulu team. The firm delivers thoughtful, high-performance engineering solutions for healthcare, education, commercial, hospitality, transportation, retail, and other complex building types.

This is an opportunity for an accomplished mechanical engineer to lead challenging projects, guide technical teams, strengthen client relationships, and help shape the continued growth of a collaborative Hawaii practice. Relocation assistance may be considered for the right candidate.

Position Description

The Principal/Senior Mechanical Engineer will serve as a discipline leader across multiple projects, taking ownership of mechanical design quality, project delivery, staff development, and client service. The successful candidate will combine deep HVAC and building-systems expertise with sound judgment, clear communication, and the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams from concept through construction.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead mechanical design projects for healthcare, education, commercial, hospitality, transportation, retail, and other building sectors.
  • Serve as Engineer of Record and oversee the preparation of mechanical drawings, specifications, calculations, analyses, and technical documentation.
  • Direct, mentor, and develop mechanical design staff while fostering accountability, collaboration, and technical excellence.
  • Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, staffing, coordination, and quality-control activities.
  • Provide construction administration, respond to field conditions, review submittals, and perform site observations.
  • Coordinate effectively with clients, architects, contractors, consultants, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Deliver responsive, solutions-focused service and build trusted, long-term client relationships.
  • Support business development by strengthening existing relationships, identifying new opportunities, and contributing to proposals and interviews.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in MEP consulting and building-systems design.
  • Demonstrated team leadership, staff management, and project-management experience within the MEP industry.
  • Healthcare building-design experience, including familiarity with HCAI requirements and compliance processes.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, applicable building codes, engineering standards, and construction practices.
  • Excellent client-service, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

Desired Experience & Skills:
  • 10-15 years of experience in positions of increasing technical and leadership responsibility within a commercial A/E engineering environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of HVAC systems for healthcare, educational, commercial, and other complex facilities.
  • Professional Engineer licensure is strongly preferred.
  • Experience cultivating client relationships and contributing to business development.
  • A collaborative leadership style and genuine interest in mentoring the next generation of engineers.
