Full Job Description
RELOCATION ASSISTANCE: No relocation assistance available CLEARANCE REQUIRED FOR START: No CLEARANCE TYPE: Secret TRAVEL: Yes, 10% of the Time Safety & Environmental Engineer Armament Systems Elk River, MN is currently seeking a Principal (Level 3) Safety & Environmental Engineer/ to be part of our Environment Health & Safety team.  The home location would be the Elk River, MN facility.  The site is a dynamic defense development facility that processes, assembles and tests military ammunition and munitions onsite.  Our Elk River location consists of a 3,200 acre facility with over 30 active buildings.  This role supports 1st shift operations on a 4/10 schedule. The Principal Safety & Environmental Engineer’s primary focus will be on safety, however will also cross train to act as a backup and provide support as needed for environmental compliance related matters.  They are responsible for facilitating hazard identification efforts, developing safety programs and systems to reduce and control safety risk and ensure compliance with general industry and other internal standards.  This role involves providing support and collaboration with Operations, Facilities, Maintenance, Logistics and Engineering teams. Ability to travel in support of analyzing explosive operations at other NG facilities, attend trainings and collaborate with other locations, <15% of the time.  Job Duties:  • Develop safety management systems and programs to reduce risk and maintain compliance to general industry safety standards.   • Develop rapport with employees to facilitate open communication of hazards, including tracking employee concerns or near misses.  • Support the Safety Committee & Safety Walks to drive employee engagement and continual improvement efforts.  • Assign, prioritize and track safety related actions to ensure completion.  • Develop and deliver effective safety training, both in person and computer-based modules. • Perform safety reviews of equipment to ensure appropriate controls, industry standards and best practices are applied.   • Perform reviews to develop safe chemical handling and storage practices, appropriate PPE selection for light chemical usage involving solvents, adhesives, epoxies, lubricants and processing agents.  • Assist in injury response by working with employees and managers to ensure our employees are taken care of and our process is followed.  • Lead cross functional incident and injury reviews to uncover system weaknesses to develop innovative solutions to prevent recurrence. • Perform ergonomic reviews of office workstations, lab and assembly operations. • Develop working knowledge over time of OSHA’s Process Safety Management, Department of Defense Contractor Safety Standards 4145 and internal company hazardous operations explosive safety standards.  • Partner with Engineering to develop safe operating procedures, ensuring appropriate controls for hazardous operations involving explosive processing and assembly, high voltage, lasers, physical, or other unique hazards. • Assist the environmental engineer in monitoring environmental compliance and performing hazardous waste or stormwater inspections across the facility.  • Obtain hazardous waste, spill response and DOT ground shipment training to serve as a backup for the environmental engineer.    • Assist with environmental compliance projects, initiatives and data gathering.  Skills & Qualifications: Must have strong multitasking, mechanical aptitude and problem-solving abilities. Well-organized, works effectively with little supervision, maintains attention to detail and deals effectively with ambiguity.  Must have strong communication and technical writing skills.  Candidate must be able to prepare and deliver briefings of technical information, with clarity, to cross functional groups.  This position is part of a larger EHS team which covers multiple facilities/ locations that share missions, so collaboration with other team members is important.  Basic Qualifications: • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM field & 5 years of related engineering experience, OR a Masters degree in a STEM field & 3 years of related experience • Ability to Obtain Secret Government Clearance (US Citizenship required) Preferred Qualifications • Bachelors degree in safety, physics, or chemistry • OSHA 30 Certification • Hazwoper 40 hr Certification • DOT Ground Shipment Certification • Experience involving explosives or hazardous materials Primary Level Salary Range: $98,900.00 - $148,300.00 The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
