Job Summary
Responsible for providing Electrical Engineering and Electrical Project Management under the supervision of a Senior Engineer. This includes overseeing electrical projects, repairs, and preventative maintenance, with increasing responsibility over time. The role involves technical interfacing with vendors and power providers, offering expertise to operations personnel, and managing the electrical components of projects from planning to maintenance. Additionally, the engineer will assist in designing electrical and automation systems, consult on system application for productivity, troubleshoot electrical issues, coordinate with contractors, mentor regional electrical staff, and contribute to corporate standards and policies.

Essential Functions
• Enforce safe operating standards, continually improve practices, i.e. develop task training, prepare short training modules, and review existing practices for improvement.
• Inspect/review plant electrical systems to ensure they are safe for plant personnel.
• Provide project scope and cost effective estimates based on sound electrical designs for Authorization For Expenditure (capital work) consideration.
• Develop, coordinate, and manage electrical projects and work across the Company, with a focus on work in your geographical area. This includes managing the project budget, maintaining conformance to scope, ensuring safety practices are followed, and overall supervision of the work.
• Interface with design teams on capital and maintenance projects.
• Monitor electrical support activities for all plants, including preventative maintenance.
• Supervise and instruct engineers, designers, and draftsman in the design of electrical applications, equipment, or systems.
• Provide input to the creation and modification of Corporate Standards, Specifications, and Policies, with respect to the NEC, NESC, MSHA, & OSHA.
• Monitor contracted electrical companies.
• Maintain/Improve established policies and procedures of the electrical department.
• Evaluate and recommend new technologies which will improve facility electrical efficiency or reduce costs.
• Review existing plant operations to find opportunities to conserve electrical energy usage

Responsibilities

Education
• Bachelors Degree of Science in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience.
• Continuing education in business related coursework desirable

Experience
• At least 5-10 years' electrical experience in mining, heavy industrial, utility, or related industry
• Experience designing and managing the construction of projects related to different types of power distribution (Overhead and Underground)
• Experience working with PLC's, Soft Starts, and VFD's
• Experience with Power System Analysis Software desired (PTW, ETAP)
• Experience designing motor control systems
• Experience hiring and supervising electrical contractors
• Experience in the management of medium and large scale electrical projects
• Experience in the management/supervision of union/nonunion employees

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Advanced computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, AutoCad)
• Knowledge of mine production techniques and equipment preferred.
• Strong knowledge and application of safety and environmental regulations (NEC, NESC, MSHA, and OSHA)
• Knowledge of Safety, Health, and Environmental policies and procedures
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to plan and manage effectively
• Ability to plan, prioritize and coordinate multiple projects and priorities at one time
• Strong relationship building skills with all employee levels and with internal and external customers
• Must represent VMC in a professional manner to all customers, vendors, and internal personnel

Other Requirements
• Motorized vehicles, computers, telephones, fax machines, cell phones, and electrical test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and clamp-on ammeters.
• Use of telephone, computers, cell phones and other electronic devices is essential.
• Must have the ability to lift 50 pounds and to stand and walk for long periods of time.
• Must have the ability to drive a pick-up truck/car on a daily basis; there may be a periodic need to travel by airline.
