The Opportunity: Our client, a Utilities company specializing in procurement, engineering, construction and installations looking for an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer to provide technical leadership on complex electrical power system projects, with a focus on MV/HV substation design and power systems engineering. Reporting to the Director of Design Services, this senior role will be responsible for driving project delivery, providing technical direction, managing client relationships, and mentoring engineering teams.
What You'll Be Doing: - Manage electrical power systems projects from initial planning through completion, ensuring they meet schedule, budget, and client expectations.
- Establish preliminary substation concepts and lead the preparation of detailed engineering deliverables, including single-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring and connection diagrams, cable schedules, raceway designs, cable trays, duct banks, cable trenches, and material lists.
- Design and document protection, control, and trip logic, including relay settings and configuration files.
- Perform or oversee electrical system studies such as load flow, losses, reactive power compensation, short-circuit, system stability, and harmonic analysis. Conduct protection coordination studies, including time-current curves, as well as arc-flash assessments using tools such as ETAP and PSCAD.
- Lead or supervise grounding system assessments and designs using SafeGrid.
- Develop and oversee the engineering design of substation communication and control networks.
- Prepare technical specifications for major electrical equipment while ensuring alignment with client requirements and current industry standards.
- Provide leadership, direction, and mentorship to Project Managers, Project Engineers, designers, and other technical personnel.
- Establish, update, and enforce technical engineering standards, guidelines, and design practices across the organization.
- Evaluate RFPs and potential project opportunities, identifying commercial and technical risks, and providing go/no-go recommendations. Lead or oversee proposal development, scheduling, and resource-hour estimates.
- Manage the allocation of engineering personnel, equipment, and other resources across multiple projects to maximize efficiency.
- Ensure engineering activities adhere to the company's Quality Management System and ISO 9001 requirements.
What You'll Need to Be Successful: - Bachelor's degree, diploma, or master's degree in electrical engineering, with a focus on power systems preferred.
- Active PEO membership and Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation.
- 7-10 years of experience in electrical power systems engineering, with substantial exposure to medium- and high-voltage substation design.
- Strong knowledge of applicable electrical codes, standards, and utility requirements, including Hydro One, IESO, and NPCC connection requirements.
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams, including technical supervision, project administration, and people management.
- Solid project management experience within the electrical power or utility sector.
- Excellent communication, organization, leadership, and client management capabilities.
- Strong understanding of ISO 9001 and established engineering quality practices.
- Experience or exposure to business development, client acquisition, or proposal development is considered an asset.
Compensation Range: $180,000-200,000/annually
