The role brings deep expertise across NetApp, Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, Nasuni, and AWS native storage services, including Amazon EFS, Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, and backup capabilities. The Principal serves as the design authority and technical escalation point for cloud storage, helping enable CloudNext and data center exit outcomes while strengthening the skills of the broader storage team.

Responsibilities

The Principal Cloud Engineer (Storage) owns the strategy, architecture, engineering, and reliability outcomes for enterprise cloud storage platforms. The role balances strategic leadership with hands-on delivery, establishing reusable patterns and automation while partnering with infrastructure, cloud engineering and operations, application teams, architecture, security, and service owners.
  • Lead the architecture, design, and evolution of cloud storage platforms in support of CloudNext and data center exit objectives.
  • Define enterprise storage patterns across NetApp, Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, Nasuni, Amazon EFS, Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, and backup services.
  • Engineer secure, scalable, highly available, and resilient storage solutions for enterprise application and data workloads.
  • Own technical standards for performance, capacity, availability, recoverability, data protection, lifecycle management, and cost efficiency.
  • Design and implement automation for provisioning, configuration, policy enforcement, monitoring, and operational support using infrastructure-as-code and Git-based workflows.
  • Create reusable modules, reference architectures, guardrails, and self-service patterns that support consistent adoption at scale.
  • Provide technical leadership for workload discovery, storage assessment, migration planning, data movement, cutover, validation, and decommissioning activities.
  • Partner with application and platform teams to select appropriate storage services based on workload requirements, performance, resilience, security, and cost.
  • Embed monitoring, logging, alerting, capacity management, and performance analytics into cloud storage platforms.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex storage incidents and performance issues, leading root-cause analysis and durable remediation.
  • Assess and manage dependencies across networking, identity and access, encryption, backup, operational tooling, and regulatory controls.
  • Guide the transition from traditional on-premises storage to cloud storage platforms while mentoring and upskilling storage engineers.
  • Influence roadmaps and investment decisions for cloud and on-premises storage technologies as the platform remit evolves.
  • Participate in an Agile delivery model, contributing to epics and stories, tracking work, and supporting planned releases.

Business Knowledge
  • Deep understanding of how storage availability, performance, recoverability, and data protection affect business services and client outcomes.
  • Ability to translate application requirements into fit-for-purpose storage architecture and clear technical decisions.
  • Ability to balance migration speed, platform resilience, security, operational sustainability, and financial stewardship.
  • Experience operating enterprise infrastructure in a regulated, risk-aware environment with strong security and compliance expectations.
  • Makes decisions aligned with enterprise technology strategy while improving platform stability, delivery consistency, and time to adoption.

Qualifications
Required:

  • Bachelor's degree or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience AND typically 10+ years of experience designing, engineering, and operating enterprise storage or cloud infrastructure with senior-level impact.
  • Deep hands-on expertise with NetApp and Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, with strong knowledge of Nasuni and AWS native storage services such as Amazon EFS, Amazon EBS, Amazon S3, and AWS Backup.
  • Expert knowledge of storage architecture, file and block services, data protection, replication, backup and recovery, performance engineering, capacity planning, and lifecycle management.
  • Experience designing storage solutions for highly available, resilient, secure, and large-scale enterprise workloads.

  • Working knowledge of AWS networking, identity and access management, encryption, monitoring, logging, and security controls that support storage platforms.
  • Proven ability to lead complex storage migrations and resolve performance, availability, and integration challenges across infrastructure and application layers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence architecture decisions and explain tradeoffs to technical and business stakeholders.
