Project Portfolio ManagerPosition Overview The Project Portfolio Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating multiple projects within an organization's portfolio to ensure strategic alignment, optimal resource allocation, and successful delivery of business objectives. This role serves as the central point of coordination between project teams, senior leadership, and stakeholders while maintaining visibility into project performance across the entire portfolio.
Key ResponsibilitiesPortfolio Strategy & Governance Define and maintain portfolio management frameworks, processes, and governance structures. Ensure all projects align with organizational strategic objectives and business priorities. Develop portfolio roadmaps and communicate strategic direction to project teams and stakeholders.
Project Oversight & Coordination Monitor project progress, milestones, budgets, and deliverables across the portfolio. Identify interdependencies between projects and coordinate resources to prevent conflicts. Facilitate cross-project communication and ensure knowledge sharing between teams.
Performance Management & Reporting Establish portfolio-level KPIs and metrics to track performance against strategic goals. Prepare executive-level dashboards and reports on portfolio health, risks, and outcomes. Conduct regular portfolio reviews with senior leadership and project sponsors.
Resource Optimization Analyze resource capacity and allocation across projects to maximize efficiency and prevent bottlenecks. Make recommendations for resource reallocation or project prioritization based on business value and strategic importance.
Risk & Issue Management Identify portfolio-level risks and develop mitigation strategies. Escalate critical issues to appropriate stakeholders and coordinate resolution efforts across multiple projects. Maintain risk registers and ensure proper risk management practices.
Stakeholder Management Build and maintain relationships with project sponsors, senior executives, and key business stakeholders. Facilitate portfolio steering committee meetings and provide strategic guidance on portfolio decisions.
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in business administration, project management, engineering, or related field. PMP, PgMP, or equivalent project/program management certification preferred. Minimum 7-10 years of project management experience with at least 3-5 years in portfolio or program management roles.
Essential Skills Strong analytical and strategic thinking abilities with experience in portfolio management tools and methodologies. Excellent communication and presentation skills for executive-level audiences. Proficiency in project management software, financial analysis, and data visualization tools. Proven ability to influence without direct authority and manage complex stakeholder relationships.
Preferred Experience Experience in similar industry or organizational context, familiarity with Agile and traditional project methodologies, and demonstrated success managing large, complex project portfolios with budgets exceeding $10M annually.
