Overview

Serves as the primary technical owner and operational steward of the organization's database, middleware, and web platform ecosystem. This role carries a dual mandate: ensuring the reliability, security, and continuity of production systems that underpin both internal operations and customer-facing applications today, while actively partnering with IT leadership to rationalize, modernize, and reduce the legacy footprint over time. The ideal candidate brings the operational discipline to maintain complex, interdependent systems with minimal oversight and the forward-looking mindset to recognize when a platform should be evolved, replaced, or retired rather than simply preserved. Looking ahead, this role will play a foundational part in building and sustaining the platform environment that powers KMBS's enterprise AI capabilities including self-hosted large language model environments and the data pipelines that connect them to our core business systems.

Responsibilities

• Administer and monitor enterprise database, middleware, and web platform systems daily; triage error logs and alert queues as first priority
• Manage and maintain scheduled automation including SQL Agent jobs, Linux cron jobs, and payroll load processing
• Deploy and maintain applications across WebSphere (WAS), OpenLiberty, and Apache/PHP platform environments
• Perform OS-level and application-level patching across Linux (RHEL) and Windows Server environments
• Own end-to-end SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle across web servers, Java keystores, and application servers
• Manage DNS records and domain registrations across multiple registrars
• Support vulnerability management via Tenable and Bitsight reporting and drive remediation of findings within defined SLA windows
• Serve as primary on-call escalation for production outages across web, middleware, and database platform tiers including after-hours response
• Diagnose and resolve failures systematically across the full platform stack (firewall • web server • app server • database)
• Tune and optimize database queries, batch processes, and scheduled jobs for performance and reliability across SQL Server and other administered database platforms
• Maintain and support integrations across the middleware platform stack including ETL pipelines, API connections, and data flows between enterprise systems
• Support the operational platform layer underlying MuleSoft integration deployments including server health, connectivity, and middleware dependencies between enterprise systems
• Evaluate and lead the migration of legacy scheduling and automation toward enterprise platforms, reducing manual operational dependencies over time
• Identify and recommend platform components that are candidates for modernization, managed service transition, or retirement in partnership with IT leadership
• Introduce and advance configuration-as-code practices to replace manual configuration with repeatable, version-controlled platform operations
• Support the design, deployment, and ongoing operations of an enterprise AI platform environment including self-hosted large language model infrastructure, vector databases, and RAG pipeline components
• Participate in functional and technical design reviews to ensure platform decisions align with performance, security, and scalability requirements
• Maintain runbooks, architecture diagrams, credential inventories, and operational playbooks for all owned systems, ensuring no critical system or process is dependent on a single individual's undocumented knowledge
• Document scheduled jobs, system dependencies, and non-standard configurations

Qualifications

Core Requirements -

• Proven production experience administering Microsoft SQL Server environments including SSIS, SQL Agent scheduling, linked servers, and T-SQL development (stored procedures, functions, views, indexes)
• Demonstrated ability to tune and optimize SQL queries, SSIS packages, and batch processes for performance and reliability
• Hands-on Linux/RHEL systems administration including shell scripting, cron job management, patching, and Apache/PHP stack operations
• End-to-end SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle management across web servers and Java keystores
• DNS record management and domain registrar relationships in a production enterprise environment
• IBM WebSphere Application Server (WAS) administration including application deployment, configuration, and operational troubleshooting
• OpenLDAP directory administration including load balancer configuration, import/export automation, and clustering architecture
• Windows Server administration including SQL Agent jobs, RDP management, and OS-level operations
• PowerShell and/or bash scripting for operational automation and recurring task management
• Systematic incident diagnosis and resolution across a multi-tier stack (network • web • application • database)

Familiarity Preferred -

• IBM DB2 - working familiarity sufficient for break-fix and annual maintenance cycles; deep expertise not required as managed service coverage is being evaluated
• SSIS / SSRS - ability to maintain and support existing pipelines and reports while evaluating a migration path toward Azure Data Factory and Power BI
• Legacy job scheduling (cron, SQL Agent) - maintain current automation while supporting evaluation and migration to an enterprise scheduling platform such as Tidal
• OpenLDAP operational knowledge - manage current directory environment while supporting a planned transition toward Microsoft Entra ID as the primary identity platform
• Uptrends or equivalent monitoring tools - familiarity with current alerting posture while driving consolidation into a unified observability platform
• MuleSoft awareness - familiarity with MuleSoft as the organization's primary integration platform; ability to support platform-layer troubleshooting of integration flows connecting SAP, Salesforce, and external APIs without owning the platform directly

Forward-Thinking Aptitude - Growth Expectations

• Infrastructure as Code (IaC) - working knowledge of or genuine interest in Ansible, Terraform, or PowerShell DSC to replace manual, undocumented configuration with repeatable, version-controlled infrastructure
• Microsoft Azure fundamentals - comfort with or curiosity about Azure IaaS/PaaS aligned to the organization's existing M365 and Entra ID footprint
• AI-assisted operations - openness to leveraging GitHub Copilot, AIOps platforms (Datadog, Dynatrace), or AI-driven automation to scale operational coverage and reduce manual overhead
• Container basics - foundational awareness of Docker and container concepts relevant to modern OpenLiberty and application workloads
• Enterprise AI platform - foundational awareness of self-hosted LLM deployment, GPU compute requirements, model serving frameworks (Ollama, vLLM), vector databases, and RAG pipeline concepts in support of an internal generative AI capability
• REST/API integration patterns - understanding of modern integration approaches in alignment with the organization's existing MuleSoft architecture
• DevOps practices - willingness to adopt CI/CD pipeline participation, version-controlled infrastructure, and structured testing standards as the environment matures

Experience

1. 8+ years of hands-on experience in database and middleware administration in a production enterprise environment
2. 8+ years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server including SSIS, SSRS, SQL Agent scheduling, and T-SQL development
3. Demonstrated production experience with Linux/RHEL systems administration including patching, scripting, and web platform stack management
4. Proven experience with IBM WebSphere Application Server or equivalent Java EE application server in a production environment
5. Experience managing SSL/TLS certificate lifecycles and DNS records across a multi-platform enterprise environment
6. Experience administering OpenLDAP or equivalent directory services in a production environment
7. Experience with enterprise vendor management including software license tracking, renewal calendars, and support escalation relationships
8. Experience authoring and maintaining operational documentation including runbooks, architecture diagrams, and system playbooks
9. Experience working independently as a primary or sole technical owner of a broad platform portfolio with minimal oversight

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field preferred
• Equivalent combination of technical training and demonstrated hands-on experience will be considered in lieu of a degree

Certifications - Preferred

• RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHCSA or higher)
• Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104) or equivalent cloud administration credential
• AWS or GCP cloud foundation certification
• HashiCorp Terraform Associate or equivalent Infrastructure as Code certification
