Full Job Description
WakeMed Children's Pediatric Surgery is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Pediatric Surgeon to join a growing, highly respected pediatric surgical practice serving infants, children, and adolescents throughout Wake County and surrounding communities. The selected physician will provide comprehensive surgical care, ranging from routine pediatric procedures to complex surgical conditions, while collaborating closely with pediatric specialists, advanced practice providers, nursing teams, and community physicians. WakeMed's pediatric surgery program provides care across multiple outpatient and hospital locations and is committed to delivering exceptional, family-centered care.

Our team currently consists of 4 pediatric surgeons, 2 nurse practitioners and 1 physician's assistant. Our physicians provide 24/7 inpatient care at WakeMed, which has WakeMed Children's (a children's hospital within the main hospital) which includes an inpatient ward, a level IV neonatal ICU, a pediatric ICU, as well as a busy Children's Emergency Department. We staff 4 outpatient clinics in the WakeMed system on a rotating basis. In addition to typical general pediatric surgery procedures, such as appendectomies, pyloromyotomies, hernia repairs, and cholecystectomies, we currently have one of the busiest centers for repair of chest wall deformities in the country. Currently, call responsibilities are split equally among all 4 surgeons. Although on-call pediatric surgeons are responsible for all general pediatric surgery emergencies in the WakeMed system, children needed surgical intervention are all transferred in to the main campus. WakeMed has an American College of Surgeons level 1 trauma center, with adult and pediatric trauma \"first call\" responsibilities covered by the adult trauma team with pediatric surgeons as consultants, if needed. We currently have a close working relationship with local academic medical centers (Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) for ECMO transfers and postoperative chemotherapy for children with cancer. Fantastic opportunity for those who have an interest in clinical teaching as our physicians also supervise medical students from Duke, UNC, and the Campbell University School of Medicine, as well as general surgery and ENT residents and pediatric emergency medicine fellows, who frequently rotate through our department. Qualified candidates must be BE/BC.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat pediatric surgical conditions in newborns, infants, children, and adolescents.
  • Perform a broad spectrum of pediatric surgical procedures, including elective, urgent, and emergency surgeries.
  • Provide pre-operative, operative, and post-operative patient management.
  • Participate in hospital call coverage and inpatient consultations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary pediatric specialists and care teams.
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical excellence initiatives.
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and postoperative care.
  • Support teaching opportunities for medical students, residents, and advanced practice providers, as applicable.

WakeMed is situated in a vibrant growing community and the area is consistently ranked among the top 10 best cities for employment potential, quality of life and year-round outdoor activities in a temperate climate. Our area also provides an ideal family environment with quality school systems and unsurpassed recreational activities.
