Standard Job DescriptionYou will be the Packaging Engineer Sr for the Packaging Engineering Team. Our team is responsible for designing, developing, and testing packaging solutions that protect, display, and handle products across programs.
What You Will Be Doing
As the Packaging Engineer Sr you will be responsible for leading packaging design initiatives, ensuring compliance, and supporting logistics coordination.
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Collaborate with IPTs, suppliers, and the Shipping team to gather packaging and transportation requirements.
- Develop system-level and subsystem packaging designs, including Special Packaging Instructions.
- Ensure regulatory compliance with DOT CFR 49 POP, ICAO, IMDG, ASTM D 3951, and applicable MIL-SPECs.
- Support POP testing activities and compile data for formal test reports.
- Drive process improvements by evaluating emerging packaging materials and recommending cost-effective alternatives.
Basic Qualifications• Knowledge of basic shipping practices, inspection requirements, and related documentation.
• Understanding of Federal DOT regulations (49 CFR Parts 171-180) and hazardous-material handling fundamentals.
• Familiarity with Special Packaging Instructions (SPI) and POP testing concepts.
• Ability to use standard enterprise computer systems (e.g., purchase-request tools, Microsoft Office).
• Education/Experience: Minimum 1 - 2 years of packaging/transportation engineering experience; associate degree or technical training in engineering, logistics, or a related field.
• Mechanical Design Fundamentals: Basic proficiency in mechanical design principles.
• CAD Exposure: Working knowledge of MCAD tools (CREO preferred; PTC Pro/E acceptable).
• Software Skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
• Regulatory Awareness: Familiarity with DOT CFR 49 hazardous-material regulations, ICAO Dangerous Goods, and IMDG Code basics.
• Packaging Standards: Understanding of ASTM D-3951 commercial-packaging guidelines.
• Communication: Strong written and oral communication; ability to produce clear technical documents and presentations for small to medium audiences.
• Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams and adapt to shifting priorities.
Desired Skills• Certification or training in hazardous-material transportation (e.g., OSHA HAZWOPER, IATA Dangerous Goods).
• Exposure to aerospace or defense program environments.
• Experience with Contractor Integrated Technical Information Service (CITIS) reporting procedures.
• Familiarity with RFID concepts and Product Data Management (PDM) workflows.
Pay InformationFull-Time Salary Range: $85300.00 - $158300.00

- Annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs may be offered depending on the position. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and can vary from year to year and are tied to a range of performance metrics.
- For (Washington state applicants only) Non-represented full-time employees: accrue at least 10 hours per month of Paid Time Off (PTO) to be used for incidental absences and other reasons; receive at least 90 hours for holidays. Represented full time employees accrue 6.67 hours of Vacation per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.
