Standard Job Description

Designs, develops, and tests a wide variety of containers used for the protection, display, and handling of products. Determines packaging specifications according to the nature of the product, cost limitations, legal requirements, and the type of protection required, considering need for resistance to such external variables as moisture, corrosive chemicals, temperature variations, light, heat, rough handling, and tampering. Designs package exteriors considering such factors as product identification, sales appeal, aesthetic quality, printing and production techniques. Responsibilities may include documentation management and an understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).

Candidate will collaborate with Program IPTs, Suppliers and Shipping Team/Department to coordinate program Packaging and Shipping needs. Will develop system, subsystems and component packaging and transportation requirement and help develop special packaging instructions (SPI) as required. Ensures contractual packaging and DOT CFR 49 POP requirements are being met. Shipment may include, Hazardous Materials, Classified or unclassified. Evaluates new packaging techniques to improve the Shipping Process. Works with vendors, Integrated product teams and customers to improve packaging designs. Performs root cause analysis on Damaged Shipments. Work with program POC as a designer and support resolving complex problems where general direction and individual participation drive Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) within the Packaging Data Content (PDC) developed content and team. The candidate will support program objectives related to PDC products and services scoped. Candidate will support the program's primary point of contact (POC) and support the coordination of shipping requests through the LM Shipping department working with the larger PHS&T team.

Basic Qualifications

  • Knowledge of shipping practices and procedures and inspection requirements. Knowledge of Company, vendor and customer shipping documents, forms, and other paperwork.
    Ability to use the Company purchase request and other applicable computer systems. Knowledge of appropriate handling and packaging procedures and Federal Department of Transportation regulations as they relate to hazardous materials. Ability to apply knowledge of MSDS in order to receive, inventory and identify hazardous materials as it pertains to GMP.
  • Familiar with development of Special Packaging Instructions required as support documentation to obtain Initial Hazard Classification, procure or fabricate packaging, and execute packaging and shipment of hardware.
  • Familiar with planning and conducting Performance Oriented Packaging Testing and Reporting. Task includes preparing test plan, coordinating with testing facility, observing testing, gathering result data, and completing test report
  • Familiar with Program Packaging Support. Includes coordinating with shipping departments, working on identifying required packaging, interfacing with regulatory agencies, and supporting program packaging questions and meetings.
  • Familiar with ensuring all Packaging, Handling and Storage (PHS) program/technical reviews are scheduled and conducted.
  • Familiar with ensuring provisions for efficient and economical protection for all system materiel are defined.
  • Familiar with developing initial packaging and packing required to ship system equipment to support test flights, ground tests, Logistic Demonstration and System Support Package requirements will be best commercial packaging utilizing procedures outlined in American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) D 3951. Preservation and packaging methods and designs will be of minimum cost consistent with the protection required.
  • Familiar with ensure all system hardware identified by System Safety as hazardous or dangerous materials will be packaged, packed, marked and labeled as required by Department of Transportation (DOT) Regulations.
  • Familiar with planning and ensuring Performance Oriented Packaging (POP) testing requirements will be complied with for all hazardous materials shipped by test reports will be developed in contractor format for hazardous materials identified per 49 CFR.
  • Familiar with conducting POP Test reports will be prepared and submitted in accordance with Data Item Description (DID)-1030. Hard copy will be submitted for DOT container certification and copies made available to other Customer agencies via the Contractor Integrated Technical Information Service (CITIS).
  • Familiar with conducting analysis of handling equipment requirements will ensure adequate facilities and equipment for handling system hardware will be available at storage depots and installations that will handle system materiel. Handling equipment requirements will be monitored throughout the program and every effort will be made to limit new requirements.

  • Familiar with Hazardous Materials transportation and shipping regulation knowledge
  • Familiar with Military specifications/standards
  • Familiar with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) knowledge
  • Familiarity and experience working with Code of Federal Regulations Title 49 (Parts 171-180)
  • Familiarity and experience working with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Familiar with Technical Instruction for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by


Pay Information

Full-Time Salary Range: $70500.00 - $130900.00

  • Annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs may be offered depending on the position. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and can vary from year to year and are tied to a range of performance metrics.
  • For (Washington state applicants only) Non-represented full-time employees: accrue at least 10 hours per month of Paid Time Off (PTO) to be used for incidental absences and other reasons; receive at least 90 hours for holidays. Represented full time employees accrue 6.67 hours of Vacation per month; accrue up to 52 hours of sick leave annually; receive at least 96 hours for holidays. PTO, Vacation, sick leave, and holiday hours are prorated based on start date during the calendar year.
