Overview

Position Summary:

The Operating Room Nurse Manager provides direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on best in-class operating procedures, nursing disciplines, and patient safety protocols. They coordinate and consult

with other healthcare professionals to assess, plan, implement and evaluate both minor and major operations

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

1. Uses an appropriate problem-solving approach to plan services.

a. Assures that clinical service objectives are established, approved by Administrative Director Surgical

Services and outcomes demonstrated.

b. Plans and directs the development, administration, and evaluation of the nursing clinical service budget

(operating and capital) for areas of responsibility and is accountable for sound fiscal management.

c. Plans/implements/markets/evaluates new services in conjunction with the Surgical Service Line and other

services as appropriate.

d. Assures that all areas of responsibility are staffed according to approved standards and requirements.

2. Provides services with consideration of the recipient’s needs.

a. Assures that services are provided with consideration of physical, psychosocial, cultural/spiritual, and age specific needs of those served.

b. Assures patient/family education with documentation in the medical record.

3. Uses equipment/supplies correctly.

a. Plans and recommends new services or equipment, or modification thereto, needed to provide and improve

patient care.

b. Serves as a member of various committees in matters pertaining to patient care and/or hospital operations.

c. Follows established procedures for equipment, computer, and instrument operations. Uses supplies

appropriately.

4. Uses appropriate safety and infection control measures.

a. Keeps staff informed of policies and procedures regarding safety and/or infection control.

b. Adheres to established hospital and departmental policies, procedures, and objectives related to safety,

quality, environment of care, and infection control, and complies with requirements of accreditation and

regulatory agencies.

c. Corrects situations that pose a threat to the safety of patients, employees, and visitors.

5. Teaches/directs/advises/informs others in an appropriate manner.

a. Assures orientation of staff according to established standards.

b. Assures staff development with outcomes demonstrated. Conducts departmental meetings per policy

6. Reports/records information appropriately.

a. Assures accuracy in all data and reports submitted.

b. Assures maintenance of current RN/RNFA/LPN/CST/CST-FA licensure. Assumes responsibility of

assuring current licensure/certification for all clinical professionals working within areas of responsibility.

7. Coaches, counsels and appraises employees regarding performance and/or disciplinary matters according

to FHC policy and philosophy.

a. Oversees all personnel selection, termination, disciplinary, and evaluation processes. Interviews, employs,

and evaluates persons for those positions directly accountable to the Director. Confers with Executive

Director Surgical Services on direct report new hires, evaluations, and disciplinary actions.

b. Coaches and develops direct reports through structuring expectations and providing timely feedback,

recognition, and reinforcement.

8. Monitors the work environment and initiates efforts to ensure general employee satisfaction.

a. Assesses staff satisfaction and acts as indicated to assure positive morale and work environment.

b. Achieves and maintains a Team Index Score of 1 on employee engagement.

9. Monitors the quality of work performed and intervenes, when appropriate, to correct or enhance services.

a. Develops/implements proper procedures to meet all regulatory body standards with a review, every three

years or on an as needed basis, of all policies/ standards of care/guidelines.

b. Utilizes internal and external comparative reports to improve quality, productivity, customer relations, and

financial performance.

c. Assures the development/implementation/evaluation of quality, risk management, and customer relations

programs for areas of responsibility in conjunction with the Surgical Service Line.

10. Makes timely decisions considering the impact on patient care, financial resources, employee relations,

public image and departmental concerns.

a. Assures that all decisions are timely, and consideration given to impact on patient care, financial resources,

employee relations, public image, and departmental concerns.

b. Assures an on-call management person for the clinical areas of responsibility 24 hours a day/7 day a week

for designated department.

11. Ensures appropriate and timely verbal and written communications to administration, departmental staff,

and peers to facilitate flow and decision-making.

a. Represents the Surgical Service Line at hospital meetings as delegated.

b. Assures availability/accessibility by making regular rounds on all shifts.

12. Supports the organization in all communications with patients, physicians, visitors, peers, and others.

a. Performs other duties as directed by the Executive Director Surgical Services.

b. Complies with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

c. Participates in community and professional activities

 

Qualifications

Qualifications:

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential

functions of this position.

Education/formal training/licensure/certification experience:

1. Graduate of an approved School of Nursing with a current North Carolina RN license or RN multi-state

licensure privilege through the Nurse Licensure Compact.

2. Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in nursing or related field preferred.

3. Minimum of five (5) years of Nursing experience or 5 years of surgical tech experience plus 3 years of

RN experience required.

4. Must have at least three (3) years of supervisory or equivalent management experience.

Additional Skills:

1. Communicates effectively with a wide range of age groups, ethics, educational, and

socioeconomic backgrounds. Must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
