Job Summary

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC to provide specialized care to adult patients with liver disease, primarily on the general hepatology inpatient service, with potential coverage of the outpatient GI Day Hospital. The role focuses on advanced liver disease management, transplant evaluation, post transplant care, paracentesis, and coordination of multidisciplinary hepatology care. Primary hours are Monday through Friday, day shift, with flexibility to meet patient and clinical needs.

Duties may include but are not limited to those listed below and may include other outpatient procedures or services as deemed appropriate by the supervising physician. It is anticipated that the APP will see patients at Duke University Hospital and may also see patients at Duke South Clinic locations depending on Division.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Record the history of present illness, past medical, family and social history, perform physical examinations in inpatient and outpatient setting
  • Establish and development treatment plan; care will be provided in conjunction with MD's as needed
  • Assist with inpatient transplant evaluations
  • Prescribe appropriate medications to a specialty pharmacy that will handle prior authorization and other necessary paperwork; order refills as needed
  • Patient and family teaching
  • Order appropriate labs, tests and procedures and follow up with patient as needed
  • Perform Paracentesis
  • Coordinate care and refer to other medical professionals as needed
  • Document consult notes, telephone, and other patient encounters in the Epic (Maestro) system
  • Review lab results in Maestro, communicate and interpret results
  • Review outside records including clinic notes, hospital records, outside radiographs, lab, and other test results
  • Cross-coverage for outpatient GI Day Hospital
  • Collaborate with nursing staff to complete patient paperwork including medication pre-certifications for insurance companies, durable medical equipment requests, disability paperwork, and handicapped permit applications
  • Attendance at GI Grand Rounds is expected. Participation in other divisional educational events is also encouraged
  • Attendance at Liver Listing Conference, Liver Pathology conference and transplant-related quality conferences are expected


Job Eligibility Requirements

Education
  • Nurse Practitioners: Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, with a Master's degree in Nursing.
  • Physician Assistants: Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program. A Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree strongly preferred.


Certification
  • ALS required.
  • BLS required.


License
  • Nurse Practitioners: Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required prior to or within 6 months of employment.
  • Physician Assistants: Must be licensed in the state of NC, and be certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.


Experience
  • 1+ years of APP experience preferred.
