Job Description

A Nurse Practitioner is a professional nurse who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide expert nursing care in the area of specialization. The Neuro Endovascular Surgery (NES) Nurse Practitioner has in-depth knowledge in the neurosciences. Under the direction of the Co-Chief of the Neuro Endovascular Surgery Division, the Nurse Practitioner has responsibilities in clinical practice, education, consultation, research, utilization review and leadership within Neuro Endovascular Surgery Division and the Medical Center.

Parnassus and Mission Bay NES Service (100% FTE)

Under the direction of the Supervising Physician and the Clinic Administrator and guided by the Committee on Interdisciplinary Practice ("CIDP") Standardized Process and Outcome Protocols and Procedures of the Ambulatory Services, the Nurse Practitioner provides direct care to patients with multiple, often complicated neurovascular problems. The Nurse Practitioner will provide care to the patients of 1 or more attending physicians within the Department of Radiology. The Nurse Practitioner will evaluate and follow patients throughout the continuum of neurovascular care; seeing patients in the Ambulatory Care Clinic and in the hospital. S/he will also provide post-operative evaluation and care through clinic appointments and telephone triage. The Nurse Practitioner shall comply with the Medical Center House and Telephone Standards.

Responsibilities

Pre-hospital clinical: Identifies potential patients through referrals, educates patients and families in their disease and treatment, evaluates patients through performing history and physical examinations and ordering laboratory tests, plans care in conjunction with Neuro IR physicians and other medical teams.

Inpatient clinical: Performs daily inpatient rounds with Neuro IR physicians, maintains ongoing inpatient assessment and communicates with other services, remains available to patients and families, writes orders under supervision of Neuro IR physicians, performs discharge planning. Outpatient/Post hospitalization: Maintains communication with patients/families after discharge by telephone follow-up, fields inquiries from patients and outside caregivers and responds quickly and appropriately with the guidance of the Neuro IR physicians, maintains proper records on each patient. Provides assessment of patient, staff, nursing needs and educates as necessary; contributes to ongoing professional development of nursing staff in area of specialization, maintains records as appropriate, assists administrative staff in arranging patient transfers, discharges, consultation, and follow-up. Screens patients for clinical trials, coordinates data collection, analyze, draft and revise research protocols.

Outpatient and Inpatient Care

• Coordinates NES clinic appointments, imaging requests, and scheduling of appointments with subspecialists depending on patient needs.
• Coordinates anesthesia for scheduled procedures.
• Assists staff and physicians with insurance authorization process as needed.
• Performs follow up phone calls for NES clinic patients for routine NES-related health conditions as well as for post-procedural care.
• Performs inpatient daily rounds with or under the supervision of NES physicians as needed.
• Performs ongoing assessment of NES patient progress, changes, and condition, reporting to NES physicians as necessary.
• Responds to patient care requests by phone, appropriately triages patient care, and seeks advice from NES physicians as needed.
• Maintains communication with care team members and assists with patient care as needed.
• Screens patients for clinical trials, coordinates data collection, analyze, draft and revise research protocols.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Graduation from a California Board of Registered Nursing approved or verified school of nursing with a master's degree in nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
• 1-3 years experience as nurse practitioner in Neurology, Neurovascular, Neurosurgery or Neuro IR.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Case management experience
• Experience managing clinical research protocols and working with hospital human subjects research committees
• Knowledge of ethical conduct of Human Subjects Research

Required Licensure/Certifications:

1. California Registered Nurse (RN) License without restriction
2. California Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) without restriction
3. California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number including Schedule II furnishing privileges
4. NP national board certification from an accepted certifying agency aligned with the patient population and clinical role
Adult Hybrid Inpatient and Outpatient (ACNP-BC, AGACNP-BC, ACNPC-AG, ACNPC). See Addendum A below for more detail.
5. California Driver License (if required for position)
6. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration with Schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 registered to a California address
7. American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
8. Additional required AHA certifications: ACLS
9. Additional required certifications (such as ENLS): None

UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs and Governance (OMAG) to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings. Credentialing takes between 60-90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day.

Salary Information

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
