Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center in Jacksonville, Florida is seeking a skilled, collaborative, and compassionate Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join our growing Division of Surgery as a nocturnal APP supporting surgical oncology, thoracic surgery, head and neck surgery, and colorectal/surgical oncology patients.

What You Can Expect

The Nocturnal Surgical Services APP provides first-line overnight clinical coverage for adult inpatients across designated surgical specialties. This role is ideal for an APP who enjoys acute care, thrives in a team-based environment, and wants to make a direct impact during critical after-hours transitions in care.

• 7-on/7-off nocturnal schedule supporting continuity and work-life balance
• Broad exposure to complex surgical oncology, thoracic, head and neck, and colorectal/surgical oncology patients
• Collaborative partnership with surgeons, APPs, nurses, consultants, and multidisciplinary oncology teams
• Meaningful role in acute assessment, stabilization, postoperative management, admissions, consults, and after-hours triage

Core Operating Principle

The primary surgical services retain responsibility for daily rounding, longitudinal patient management, and surgical decision-making. The nocturnal APP serves as a shared clinical resource across designated surgical specialties to enhance continuity, responsiveness, postoperative support, and after-hours coverage.

What You Will Do

• Care for a complex adult surgical population, including patients with benign and oncologic conditions within colorectal, thoracic, head and neck, and surgical oncology services.
• Serve as the first-line overnight APP contact for inpatient clinical needs, nursing calls, abnormal results, medication concerns, pain and symptom management, fluid/electrolyte issues, and other acute clinical questions.
• Perform bedside assessments, initiate appropriate evaluation and management within scope, and escalate significant clinical changes or surgical decision-making needs to the appropriate on-call surgeon.
• Support postoperative transitions by receiving PACU-to-floor handoffs, reviewing postoperative orders, addressing early postoperative concerns, and identifying unexpected findings requiring escalation.
• Assist with overnight admissions and consults, including initial assessment, documentation, diagnostic workup, and communication with the responsible surgical team.
• Provide after-hours outpatient triage for established surgical patients using defined protocols and escalation pathways.
• Ensure strong morning handoff to primary surgical teams regarding significant overnight events, pending studies, new admissions/consults, and issues requiring follow-up.

• Schedule: 7 on / 7 off, 7:00 p.m. - 7:00 a.m.

What You Will Need

• Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or graduate degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program
• Current Florida licensure, or eligibility for licensure, as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA)
• National certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
• Minimum of 1-2 years of APP experience in surgery, critical care, hospital medicine, emergency medicine, or another acute inpatient setting required
• Oncology or surgical specialty experience is valued, but candidates with strong acute care skills and an interest in oncology are encouraged to apply
• Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and ability to collaborate effectively with surgeons, nurses, consultants, and multidisciplinary teams
